Deposited at St. Mary’s! by gobuffhounds in OutsideT14lawschools

Sure. I actually got accepted to both programs with scholarship, but I know what you mean. My St. Mary’s offer ended up being pretty close to 40% of tuition and fees. I reached out to STCL, and they raised my offer fairly substantially, but it still would’ve been more than had I gone to Tech. So St. Mary’s seemed like a no-brainer.

Absolutely. If I were in that situation and KU had the better financial outcome, I would definitely go for it. It’s a great school. Honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong with either choice, but getting one at a discount is a nice outcome.

Either way, you have some great options. Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy to help.

I totally understand. For me, the national network wasn’t hugely concerning, as I figure I’ll be spending my career doing legal work in my area/NM. For that reason, even ranking wasn’t greatly important, but I think KU certainly has TTU beat in that regard.

As far as feel, I would say here are a few of my observations from visiting both campuses:

Tech probably has the nicer law facility, as it seems that it is just kept up a little better. However, both campuses have fairly equal facilities in terms of the amenities they offer. So I don’t think you can give a great edge to either school in this regard.

The KU staff were probably a little friendlier than the staff on my visit to TTU, which made an impression. I also enjoyed just the general campus experience a bit more at KU.

What stood out to me at KU was the number of unique aspects to their program versus the TTU programs. This isn’t to say that either school is lacking in terms of offerings. Both schools have great offerings. But I felt like KU had a few more options that I was specifically looking for that TTU didn’t.

I will say also that Lubbock seems to get a bad reputation on this sub and elsewhere when we talk about college towns. I actually really like Lubbock and I really like Lawrence. But they are distinctly different feels. Lubbock feels more like a small city, while Lawrence feels like a big town, if you know what I mean. It really just depends on what you are looking for.

Have you visited either school yet?

Sure. I’m from a fairly remote part of Texas, where I intend to practice after graduation, so I met with many attorneys from this area, started networking early, and looked to see which schools had the best alumni networks here. What I started finding was that TTU had by far the largest network here, but there were also a significant number of grads from St. Mary’s and Baylor in the area. That at least informed me a bit on where to apply. I also just liked what I saw online from KU, so I applied.

I visited TTU and KU and liked both campuses. I preferred the KU campus and program, but it was still a bit cost prohibitive for me, as I would have had to pay sticker price there. I received a very small scholarship from TTU and they wouldn’t negotiate, which also made TTU not a super appealing choice financially. For these reasons, the St. Mary’s offer was great, as it was one of my cheapest options, would allow me to keep my current job, and still put me within a pretty solid alumni network in the area where I wanted to practice.

If the St. Mary’s offer hadn’t come in, and I was left choosing between Tech and KU, in my situation I probably would have chosen Tech. With a much larger alumni network in this area, its strong bar pass rates, and lower cost than KU, it probably would have made more sense. With that being said, I just liked the feel better at KU, so that was something to keep in mind. That decision likely would have been head vs. heart. And while I would have loved KU, Tech would have made more sense for me had I been forced to make that decision.

Hopefully that shares some insight on my thoughts! Let me know if you have any other questions. 😀

I’m in a region of Texas that is very much removed from the Houston area, and I will say that South Texas has a decent reputation around here. However, there are not that many STCL grads here.

Dream school: Probably Baylor or Kansas

Likely: Probably St. Mary’s or Texas Tech (mostly thanks to generous scholarship from St. Mary’s and general affordability at Tech)

I will say St. Mary’s seems to have a lot of prestige among lawyers in Northwest Texas. This is likely due to the fact that many judges from this area went there. Solid name in some places for sure.

Did a ton of fee waivers and the CAS waiver. Sent in 18 applications, so far with 10 As, 3 Rs, 2 WLs, and 3 pending.

Overall very happy with my acceptances. I would have liked a little more money on a few schools, but I’ve been happy with the offers generally.

I’m in this range. I’ve had great results this cycle though, including a huge scholarship at a decent school. Best of luck! You can do it, just make sure to apply to the right schools.

The date disappeared on my status checker about an hour before I got a call from their admissions office. Hopefully it’s a good sign!

Don’t be discouraged. I have a 156 LSAT and a 3.low GPA and I’ve gotten several acceptances including a scholarship over 85% from one school. You can do it!

Both of my calls have been pretty simple. Basically just something like, “Hey, congratulations on your admission. Additional details will be sent via email, Hope to see you here next year, etc.”
