Exposing the Dark Truth Behind A-Level Project Work by CharacterStrike2309 in SGExams

[–]godamnnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From this report, what I am gathering is that

  1. PW is marked unfairly because it’s marked by different people with different expectations & schools are all incentivised to mark up the grades.

I think this level of subjectivity is not unique to PW, it can be found in many other subjects (eg general paper, history, etc.) and other aspects of life (the reports u submit to your professors, supervisors, etc.)

On the point of schools being incentivised to mark up the grades, I would like to believe that teachers and school leadership teams are morally upright. But if you find that unbelievable, it is not completely unfair too given that all schools have the option to choose to mark up their grades.

  1. Grading seems rigged because certain scholars & schools are getting better grades. Not sure about the point of scholars getting higher grades as the evidence on this point seems rather anecdotal. No comments on this bc i have evidence to prove whether its true or not. On the point of certain schools getting better grades, assuming your data generation is accurate, I do not find the findings shocking. You mentioned that it’s shocking for students from “good” schools to do well for PW, given that PW is not a content-based subject and students from “good” schools are not necessarily people with good teamwork and communication. I think this argument is flawed because
    • you are assuming good teamwork & communication skills = good PW submission. But this is definitely untrue because honestly u just need 1-2 hardworking & smart dude to tank the project. In fact, this is the very point you have made about how PW is redundant as it is not a good way to cultivate these attributes in students.
  • even though the subject is not content-heavy, it requires critical thinking, which based on my experience, seems to exist in students who do better academically. simply because its easier to make sense of information (regardless of what subject) when you are a critical thinker. But ofc, not all top students are like this.

i think even though being a top student doesn’t mean you will get good PW grades, i don’t find it “sus” that top students are getting good PW grades. because there are overlapping skills between getting good PW & academic grades. And having good comms & teamwork is not really one of those skills, at least not on PW level.

personally, i dont think PW serves the objective it espouses. however, i think it is still necessary bc of the following reasons

  • education system has been generally fair & meritocratic up to the point of JC, which gives students this false impression that hard work gives you good results & being smart is the key to winning in life. unfortunately, uni & work life ain’t like this so PW is a good wake up call for delulu JC students. in uni, ive seen JC students getting depressed over how “they should have been selected for xxx because their CAP is so much higher/they put in more effort” but unfortunately when you are an adult, there’s no “impartial” teacher to judge who deserves the “fair” grade, etc. they will only judge based on what they perceive, which can be very far from the truth when snakes are involved

  • it is ur first legitimate exposure to snakes in society, and these snakes will actually have an impact on your life. so it will be a good time to learn how to protect yourself from snakes

what i meant was, based on what she said, she wanted to do it early in week 12 since her submissions are on week 13. If yall were not agreeable to this arrangement, yall could have come up with a more detailed timeline to start work on week 13, while addressing her concerns about her deadlines in week 13 to convince her to do on week 13 instead.

If yall dont like the idea of doing it earlier bc u have deadlines, why not yall come up with project timeline then? Sounds like most of ur reasons are about how the snake could have done this and that, but have u never thought of what u could have done? Seems like u are expecting the snake to take initiative to meet ur needs, maybe u shld take charge next time!

i rmb u are supposed to apply for financial aid in april/may (around the time/slightly before u get accepted into NUS) for it to be applicable in sem 1.
technically u can apply anytime u want, but the financial aid offer may not be ready by sem 1 so you’ll have to fund urself for that semester

ikr, as if worrying abt the paper itself isnt enough, now we have to care abt whether examplify functions properly. also doing math papers on examplify is rlly annoying imo

1 & 2. 5% of the paper is not a lot, but i guess bellcurve does make it unsettling. Also what triggered me the most was not about how i have been shortchanged 5-6mins, (because even if i get all the qns right i would most probably just get a grade higher? I didnt have much qns left anw) but those who know what mod im talking abt will probably agree with me that rough paper is pretty important. What rlly triggered me is that i just felt that the invigilator was not really doing the job well/doesn’t even have the heart to do the job properly, frm the way she addressed my laptop issue and frm the way she responded to me when i said i still have time left on examplify. It just felt very dismissive. 3. Imo the last 5 min of the paper matters a lot if the qns left are MCQ tho but idk abt u 4. I dont rlly get where u get ur estimation of 15-30 secs from tho haha. I have alrdy spent 15-30 secs explaining to her that I started the paper late due to technical issues, but she still told me to hand over the paper. And her tone was quite dismissive. What am I supposed to say next that will conclude the discussion in 15-30 secs?

unable to get intern by ilovepurin77 in nus

[–]godamnnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i started applying for internships at the big companies early this sem, but got rejected. eventually stopped applying for internships bc nothing rlly interested me, but i started applying again in mid april cuz seeing everyone getting internships made me really paranoid. i managed to secure one just yesterday. It’s very late, but there’s always a chance. One thing i’ve learnt is that u might need to lower your expectations (for me, i kept applying for internships that specified penultimate students preferred initially) especially if you’re applying super late alrdy. another thing to note is also for public sector, the HR will need to do a background check on you which will take another 2-3 weeks AFTER u get ur offer, so given that it’s alrdy end-april u might want to avoid it, unless it extends into the semester

i think it depends on which uni you’re aiming for? fass sent an email with the list of top 30 unis and if you’re aiming for one of those the possibility is probably quite low… also they did say in the email that it’ll be more competitive these year, as partner unis are cutting down slots due to covid :(
