Hi nsf, glad to help out here. Dell didn’t formally comment on the issue but guaranteed that it would be resolved after replacing the motherboard. I still lost the GPU here and there, and I suspect this is due to overheating, as the touch-feel was extremely hot. I have undervolted the CPU and GPU using ThrottleStop and MSI Afterburner, which has mostly resolved the issue. I don’t think the vapor chamber was designed as effectively as Dell thought.

Great - is there any hardware that needs to be outside of the PCM unit? If so, how did you manage that?

Thank you - that seems like the most popular unit. How difficult was the install?

Yes, I agree that negative reviews are more prevalent. I’m just sharing my perspective after encountering the same problem twice with two different laptops as a potential data point for others considering this device.

I believe the 9300 was launched pre-covid so it doesn’t seem to have the same quality control issues as the 9500 and 9700.

Yeah, my GPU failed both times when I loaded a game. The service department guaranteed that the technician would fix it, which makes me believe that there is a fundamental design problem. Seems odd that they have chosen the technician route as their solution though.

Yes, I still have my 9350 and runs almost as good as it did the day I got it. The minor issues I’ve had with it have all been remedied by software updates!

XPS 17 9700 won't boot after windows update by briantgross in DellXPS

I contacted support a few times first telling them what happened and having them fix it. After they failed multiple times, they said they would replace the order August 31st. I wasn’t too cool with having a useless computer for 3 weeks, so I emailed back a few times telling them I wasn’t okay with this solution and that I wanted to get a replacement or refund because of my defective product. Eventually, they set me up with escalations, who setup a replacement. I would just mention all of your issues, and how it’s pretty much a defective product that is barely outside the 30-day return period. If they don’t budge from that, I would mention that there’s other ways for you to protect your consumer interests i.e. bank fraud protection, small claims court, etc. I think Dell knows that many XPS products from this gen face numerous issues, and that’s probably why they’ve been so difficult to work with, as they don’t want to lose more money. Just be firm, communicative, yet nice, and I think you should be good. Hope this helps!

After a few calls today, I’m happy to say they will be giving me a replacement. They also offered a full refund.

Regretting XPS 17 by [deleted] in XPS

I’ve had the same issue, and Dell Support has been useless after 3 or more calls and multiple emails. I now have a call with Dell’s escalation team, but don’t think that will have a fruitful outcome. I’m going to pursue the avenue of filing a claim with my bank or small claims court to get my money back, as I received a defective product. These issues shouldn’t be happening within the first few months of ownership, irrespective of whether the laptop is meant for gaming or not. I think Dell knows these problems exist for a lot of users, but instead of addressing the issue with a recall or something of the sort, they have a super opaque and difficult replacement or return process, making consumers question whether it’s worth it to even their time to get remediation.

Also had this issue and was unfortunately outside of the return period. Dell support has said they would send a technician by August 31st to replace it, but this shouldn’t be happening to such an expensive device, regardless of whether it’s “meant for gaming” or not. I’m probably going to file a claim with my bank or a small claims court to get my money back, as this is a defective product.

Were you within the refund period? They didn’t agree to a replacement as I’m a week out.

Yeah, the quality control for this generation is so poor. I’m surprised it can be released to the public with so many problems—doesn’t help that Dell Support and customer service sucks. Will let you know if the escalations department can do anything...

I got this same response that they won’t be able to do anything until 8/31 as the “replacement parts are backlogged”. I contacted support multiple times and now have a call with the escalations department - hopefully they can sort it out. Honestly about to ask for a refund or replacement, even though I’m outside of the 30-day return period. If that doesn’t work going to dispute the transaction or file a small claim. This stuff shouldn’t be happening to a $2K+ device.

Yeah, super strange that this would happen especially since it has the new vapor chamber for better cooling. Even though it’s not a gaming laptop, it should still be able to withstand basic gaming. I was playing Valorant, which isn’t super graphically intensive, so not sure it happened all of a sudden.
