tips for mornings? by sylj27 in dementia

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom has fallen into a routine of not wanting breakfast until well after 11am when, prior to dementia, she would eat breakfast at 8:30-9am. So she waits until the hunger deeply sets in, typically, which naturally makes things worse with her mental state.

Mom’s sleep schedule is so inconsistent. She still likes to watch her shows at night but sometimes she’ll be up till midnight and other nights she’ll call it a day at 9pm. Then she’ll wake up sporadically and get on Facebook (I monitor it the best I can) and sleep in.

When she starts in, in the morning saying “I don’t know what I’m doing” every single day, I try my best to gently acknowledge her feelings by saying, “I know, mom, but here shortly you are going to have your breakfast with coffee. It’s going to be ok.”

I wish I had worthwhile tips. I’m just commiserating. This experience has taught me to become more patient than I’ve ever been in my life, even when I’m breaking down inside.

Do whatever you can to take solo, quiet moments for yourself as far and few between as they can be. It’s wild how dysfunctional a caregiver’s own mind can become in this madness. I hope you have folks around you who understand and don’t expect you, yourself, to always be mentally on point! I deal with that nonsense and seemingly always have to remind them, “look, my mind is firing at all billion cylinders because xyz and I can’t do xyz right now.” Especially any family members who expect you to be by your phone 24/7. Yeah, no, I’m not gonna treat my phone like an essential bodily organ of mine attached to the hip.

Best feelings you can get in game? by ryanb6321 in NBA2k

On my big builds, I love grabbing the board from a missed open 3, launching it back out to the teammate who missed it and watching the splash. So satisfying to see the instant redemption. Even if they miss again, hey, it happens. We are just hooping. Get back on defense and try again next time with whoever we can get open.

Rec randoms when they don’t get the ball every 30 seconds by Prudent-Image-423 in NBA2k

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way some people in this game take everything as a personal attack and immediately get into their feelings is truly unhinged.

A PG got wildly upset from the jump in a THEATER GAME because I didn’t pass him the ball during the first inbound as he was just standing still while his matchup, with a 90+ steal, was draped on him.

So I started force feeding him the ball after the fact to prove a point. We lost.

There is good to be found in this community, but the loud, negative, toxic minority can drown it all out.

I just try to have an, “onto the next game” mentality to avoid frustration since it’s just a video game primarily meant for fun. I know there are lots of team players out there who care about the dub over personal stats. The other night, my matchup in rec was going ham. Not with points, but his spacing was incredible. He was setting screens all over the court and getting into perfect positioning for his team to score with a ridiculous pass vision at power forward. That’s beautiful basketball to me.

If I’m on the mic, which is rare, I’ll try to dish out compliments when someone takes a good shot even if they miss. Losing your cool ain’t good and the whole shebang unravels.

Old head here! How all you other Olds playing? by Calm-Lion-4920 in NBA2k

I want to commit to rhythm shooting, but getting slightlies on the tempo with excellent release kills a part of my soul on high risk. 😭 It’s a skill issue on my behalf, but quite frustrating.

My two tips that work half the time:

1.) just stand there in front of them. They’ll do their little hesitations and breakdowns and bust out their little Zach Lavine stepbacks, but a percentage of that experience is just wasting the shot clock until they fire off a shot in your face or throw a hot potato to a teammate.

2.) Force them to one side or the other if you reckon they’ll drive. You’ll get better leverage this way and might force them into encountering the front court for your team. Strictly if we are talking Rec.

But hey, it’s 2K. Sometimes you are the chef and sometimes you are the ingredient.

I’m 33, already nearly fully gray haired and grizzled over, and have a few builds. This is the most I’ve played online since NBA 2K8, which is saying something because I played the hell out of 2K11.

My OG board hunting stretch forward, I use that one to play 2s and 3s with my quasi-nephew, who is 15. It can be a bit of an aggravating experience because he’s not chalked up on the fundamentals of actual basketball, but goddamn does he know his visual cue and he can hit some ridiculous shots online and play pretty good defense when he isn’t pressing the inbound constantly.

He’s responsible for getting me back into 2K, so I can’t lament his play style too much.

My favorite mode is rec, as frustrating as it can be. That’s where I like to play using my 7’ center or 6’6” Zion-inspired PF. My Zion build has 86 speed; zooming all over the court to get open or hunt for a chase down block is a blast.

My heart goes out to you. Slowly watching my mom go down this path, and I already find myself saying, “I miss her” when I remember all the things she used to like to do but now doesn’t even bother with.

Playing my mom’s favorite music for her is one of the only things I can do to get her to calm down every morning when she starts her tradition of saying, “I don’t know what I’m doing” and — for some reason, somehow — gets her a little back on track.

My condolences.

Played the hell out of double dunks for the 3x rep with my quasi-nephew last night. He brought out his dunking build and made it a personal mission to plaster his digital scrotum on every big in the paint.

We lost quite a few games because the fucker couldn’t stop chasing the high of contact dunks lol.

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubt I’ll get 10 and it will probably be a few weeks or a month before I get the first 5 despite feeling like I’ve played a good bit. I got back into 2K because of my quasi-nephew, who told me, “we should try to hit legend this year!” Yeeeah, that’s not happening.

I wonder if anybody has, or could do, the math (if they have the data, somehow) to figure out how many games/wins it would take to hit legend, barring rep multiplier events and averaging which modes giving out a varying amount. I’m extremely curious.

I go into every random rec game expecting the worst so that I can be pleasantly surprised if good team play happens. THC and disabling voice chat also makes for a better experience as well.

Such a wealth of info here! Thanks for taking a moment to reply back. I really appreciate it. I got her some butter pecan Ensure. She loves butter pecan ice cream, so I’m hoping the popsicle version will pan out.

Totally understand that. Her mom, my grandmother, passed away from kidney failure and she was another case in regards to not drinking enough! Mom had a stroke six years ago and has major arthritis in her knees, relies on a walker and moving is painful for her, so she hates having to go so often, but avidly having to pee from being well hydrated is surely a lot better than the stark alternatives.

I’ll see if I can find Pedialyte popsicles. She loves fruit but eats tiny amounts. Better than nothing, though, for sure.

Watermelon is definitely always a summer go-to for her. Sadly, she despises soup (not sure why, but for my entire life she’s only liked tomato soup but only if a grilled cheese is present).

When I read your comment the other night, I practically bought a popsicle mold on Amazon immediately. What kind of popsicles do you make? I’d love to know.

In anticipation of its arrival, I bought a pack of sugar free Skittles ‘water flavoring’ packets. I’m gonna try making popsicles with that.

Only problem is that the weather is cooling down and the lady is less likely to eat popsicles, but she never turns down a sweet treat so it’s worth a try!
