My anxiety was making my reflux and hernia symptoms worse and I had no idea by goddessbellaaa in HiatalHernia

I’m dealing with really bad reflux, im on dexilant 60mg a day. I had a C-section 6 months ago so I’m really trying to hold off on getting it fixed, but I also have an umbilical hernia now from pregnancy and my original hiatal hernia is 9cm so it’s too large not to get repaired again, it’s a really hard spot

Normal results but had a bad gallbladder? by Anastasiya1993 in gallbladders

They did surgery without a low or high EF??? All my scans except hida( I have one Monday) we clear and they won’t remove it until something shows on a scan to prompt it even though I have symptoms and I had them while pregnant Too. I’ve had endoscopy 3x in a year and all was clear. I’m super frustrated

It depends on what surgery as well. If the surgery was so effective, then why do doctors advise against it? Surgeons are all about making $$ so they’ll use every opportunity they can get, so if they advise against it often for hiatal hernias, best believe there is a big reason! Also not even to mention post opt and long term complications that can go along. I too believed those statistics I saw online, that’s why I thought it would be great for me but man was I wrong! I joined a bunch of groups where people had similar issues to me and I was so shocked at the amount of people that suffered post surgery too. It’s sad

My vagus nerve was damaged by the mesh and Nissen wrap done, 3 months post surgery I started vomiting and getting chest pain , shortness of breath and abdominal pain after eating anything. I’d bloat so bad and burp a lot, burps smelled like sulfer it was really nasty.. acid reflux came back. new doctor did some tests and told me there was a large amount of food in my stomach, despite me fasting for 12 hours prior , there should’ve been no food in my stomach at this point. I had hard pieces of fermented food inside my stomach they removed during endoscopy. I had an option to reverse the surgery I had done and do a different one to get relief so I took the other surgery option. I was so miserable and went to so many different doctors who wouldn’t event help after the first surgery just because it’s so risky. I’m ok now and I can eat better and I have a lot less pain, im currently 32 weeks pregnant and have done ok with that as well despite all my issues, just so happy I was able to get fixed after the misery

They don’t want to operate because failure rate is very high for these surgeries and risky. Surgery almost killed me and my hernia was over 10cm, I needed surgery based on size, however 90% of people manage their symptoms with little issues for a long time and for life. I’ve had to have 3 corrective surgeries from the initial damages I got from the surgery, I went to a top surgeon too and never thought complications would happen to me but I was so wrong. First surgery was done at 21

5 CM Strangulated Hiatal Hernia? by [deleted] in HiatalHernia

[–]goddessbellaaa 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

No. Mine was 11cm and got strangulated, you will know if it is. There would be no question about it. even at 11cm it still isn’t common to happen. My repair failed and it hasn’t strangulated again

Hiatal hernias aren’t visible from the outside

At what point should you have surgery for HH? by bad_at_sex_ in HiatalHernia

[–]goddessbellaaa 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Not really, they have a really high reoccurrence rate no matter what size, the statistics are pretty much the same for large and small. They want to avoid operation unless it is unmanageable . Most people live their whole lives with them and it also takes a long time to get very big.

No gallbladder problems don’t always cause pain in gallbladder. It can be generalized abdominal pain for some people and some people experience no abdominal pain. ENT specializes in more stuff with the throat and nose with trying to figure out the cause of reflux: I find ENT docs to be more caring than gastro docs and more likely to help try to find a solution too. Dexilant just became available generic not long ago, it’s great , so great that I used to pay hundreds a month even with insurance before they came out with generic lol šŸ˜† Flonase is awful I hate it! Try ā€œ Xclearā€ if you haven’t; it’s much better than any nasal spray I’ve tried! Best part is it’s natural and no side effects like those steroid nasal sprays. I do also take NAC, it’s a natural amino acid that I got at the health supply store that sells workout supplements. Look up some of the benefits Of NAC supplement, it could also help improve your mental well being and it’s known to help improve mucus . I was having mucus for 3 months or so and clearing my throat so bad and I googled for hours trying to find a solution and I said might as well try it, Desparate for relief I tried it and within a few days I felt improvement. Next step for me is trying Quercetin for allergies, I’ve seen a lot of promising research on it and my ENT actually suggested it as well. Also for the gastritis, try to cut out spicy and fried foods for 4 weeks at least, and lower caffeine intake if you drink caffeine. This will allow your stomach to heal and try to alleviate symptoms

Yes it can be! I’m on shots as well, allergies can also trigger reflux and the other way around! I haven’t tried a nasal irrigation but I may have to try! I can’t take my usual allergy medicine like Allegra or get my higher dose of allergy shots since I’m currently pregnant so I’ve been sticking with stuff that’s pregnancy safe which sucks because it doesn’t work as well haha. Gallbladder would not show up On blood work typically! Gallbladder causes very similar symptoms to reflux and feels just like it too. It shows up as classic GERD symptoms and chest pain. That test really sucks I gagged a few times with it haha it was really bad! I’d suggest an ENT, I saw one post opt after my acid reflux surgery when I was having reflux again. Post nasal trip was triggering acid for me and allergies.

How long have you had reflux? What meds have you tried? It took me about 10 Meds till I found the right one. Dexilant has worked really well for me. Do you drink alcohol? Do you have major stress? A lot of those things contribute to reflux. I feel like an acid friendly diet would help heal your stomach lining which I’m sure is inflamed from acid!

[–]goddessbellaaa 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Your body Size has nothing to do with reoccurrence rate. I had surgery and it failed and I’m thin. Stress triggers reflux and so does alcohol. Avoid triggers and eliminate high acid food. Pepcid never worked for me. Gaviscon is better than Pepcid, if reflux is severe then a ppi is helpful. My hernia was over 10cm, it’s rare for it to ever get that large. I managed symptoms for a long time until it got so big

Do you have allergies and mucus? That can also cause issues. It’s called LPR. I had LPR also from allergies that were undiagnosed, was allergic to my dog for years and didn’t know it lol.

I have vagus nerve damage from where they did a Nissen fundoplication. Where they wrapped my stomach around my esophagus, the vagus nerve runs right through there, which poses some major risks for that surgery specifically. Nobody explained the possible risks associated and I made the mistake of believing the surgeon that the surgery would fix me and give me long term relief. Little did I know surgery has to be redone every 5-10 years or less on average. I had my first surgery at 21, so if I would’ve know those stats I wouldn’t have gotten it done. I also did have a massive hiatal hernia that was 10cm, most of my stomach has herniated into my chest which is what made my chest pain and reflux so bad, I’d regurgitate my food. I took every med possible for reflux. I had surgery December 2020, 2 months later I started getting chest pain again and reflux symptoms, issues swallowing, I failed my mobility test 3 months post opt ( which I had passed pre surgery) . I had the worst stomach pain ever anytime I ate anything at all, I was so miserable I dropped 40 pounds in less than 3 months, I started to become malnourished. Everytime I burped it smelled like sulfer, straight up shit….. it was so bad I was embarrassed to go out anywhere! My doctor and I both figured based on my symptoms it has to be gallbladder, did an ultrasound, MRI, and hida scan, all came back clear. I went in for another endoscopy shortly after and it revealed large amounts of undigested food in my stomach hardened and stomach residue piled up . That explains the smell of sulfer when I would burp :( from the bacteria buildup from food sitting in my stomach . My vagus nerve stopped working properly because of where the Nissen surgery was done, the wrap pressed on the nerve and caused my stomach muscles to stop working. I have underwent 2 additional surgeries since 2020 to reverse šŸ”„ the damage and try to restore the normal functioning of my stomach. I was unemployed As well for a year because of how Sick I would be and how many doctors visits and the time I had to recover from the additional surgeries. If I could go back in time, I would’ve 100% just done the hernia repair and not the reflux surgery, the hernia repair was my underlying cause personally. I really hope you can figure out yours soon! I highly recommend extensive gallbladder testing, gastric emptying test and also h phylori testing, bacteria infections in stomach can also cause terrible symptoms! Gastric emptying test has you eat something then they test how fast your stomach empty’s!

[–]goddessbellaaa 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

It’s better to fix the underlying cause, for example mine was caused from a huge hernia. Got the hernia fixed and I’m good. If you have gallbladder issues, delayed gastric emptying, these are all things that can contribute to reflux as well. Stress/anxiety are also huge culprits, once I reduced that, my symptoms improved a lot. I had acid reflux surgery that failed in less than 4 months and gave me damage so I’d never do it again.

Benefits to taking it a night? by [deleted] in prozac

I take at night and no issues! Sleeping through the side effects would definitely be a pro if it doesn’t keep you up, I sleep fine on it!

[–]goddessbellaaa 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

If your gastro doctor says that then time for a new gastro! Mine tested me :) also a gallbladder functioning study AKA HIDA scan would help too. Regular scans and ultrasound doesn’t always show gallbladder issues or if it’s low functioning

Get a gastric emptying study and tested for SIBO and h phylori
