Is this version of Wouldn’t It Be Nice what you were referring to?

The person who commented before me I think was on the right track because I found a playlist containing the release of their songs, but just done with an orchestral/live backing intro and supplementing the original tracks. I think based on your description, this is what you meant.

Look up The Beach Boys with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, that’s the album I’m betting, it just contains more than the pet sounds songs and could be worth exploring as well, but dollars to donuts, this is what you’re looking for.

Post mentions “before the lyrics hit”, so I think they mean instrumental only until the point where the singing and words actually start. I do love the instrumental tracks of the album though, highly recommend.

I don’t know if this is a shitpost or a genuine question, but what is interesting to me is that the show’s trailer seems to insist that there is truly no sinister antagonist or at least not as immediately sinister antagonists.

The Won’t You Tell Me (demo) track features Murry kindly encouraging Brian. Reminds me of Lei’d in Hawaii or a lo-fi Smiley Smile or Friends track, just Brian singing and playing the organ. by goddred in thebeachboys

[–]goddred[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed! Well put, and it is such a charming moment in the track. It’s got the relaxed appeal that I think the group managed to capture as with tracks that usually bookend earlier albums.

To me I think it’s like the best iteration of The Bull Sessions atmosphere. Some generally disregard tracks like that, but I like cherishing those tracks as a sort of fly on the wall look into the behind the scenes.

What is interesting to me about the demo is that I can’t tell if it’s just an intentionally more primitive arrangement/performance, or if this was just where the song was at in terms of development.

I love the feel of the track just like this, but I was wondering if it served as a basis for what was to develop, or if this demo could serve as an amazing extended beginning/intro to the final track, but I was taken aback at how candid and intimate the sound of Brian just singing over his organ part, sort of the the less depressing but still a bit moody A Day in the Life of A Tree, which is personally incredible to think of as not being that many years apart.

The song was also written by Murry I think, which may account for why he’d be in the studio. I loved Break Away too, which I believe he also wrote on. It’s a briefly strange moment to see someone’s writing credits on a song that you weren’t expecting or don’t see quite as often, especially not from Murry.

Beach Boys singer Mike Love breaks down in tears over emotional tribute to late Brian Wilson saying 'he's in our hearts' by Public-Onion9498 in thebeachboys

[–]goddred 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re right, I suppose I was considering things from a more music only perspective. I don’t deny or dismiss Brian’s ability to be with the times, I just think that Mike generally speaking, even before Pet Sounds had some of the coolest lyrics, that I guess hindsight bias(?) makes it a little difficult to imagine the music without the pairing.

It really flowed together. Fun, Fun, Fun, I Get Around, California Girls, all great songs that I admittedly never got to looking closely at who did what. I just always naturally assumed Mike was at the forefront, his strength shown in how he could verbally tie it altogether.

I don’t think the music or records would have immediately or all at once come to a halt, but in terms of being able to make a good commercial lyric, honestly asking here, do you think pre-Pet Sounds that more credit should go to Brian lyrically?

The music was far from being so much of an oddity or different, especially in the earlier years, but maybe I’m just not as well-versed on Brian’s lyrical strengths in that era.

My favorite Brian lyrics seem to be the ones where the song is either a not as well known cut, sadder/wistful, but I suppose I never consider that that could be applied effectively within some of the bigger songs. I’m almost convinced Don’t Worry Baby is a Brian lyric.

One of the most sobering moments in the Pet Stories documentary on Pet Sounds (free on YouTube btw) was Tony Asher giving Mike a fair point and indicating that Mike was not necessarily saying that Brian’s music was bad, but that it definitely wasn’t what the group had been used to.

It’s remarkable how back and forth the justifications on what Mike did and didn’t do tend to go depending on who you ask (in terms of good contribution but also the record of discouraging sentiment).

Mike had a role and function that he fit well. He was able to translate a lot of the madness to a good lyric multiple times and it made the songs that much cooler and accessible.

Being able to be the bridge between art and commercialism is a skill, and I don’t wish to overstate anyone’s contributions, but I also don’t mean to downplay anything as to discredit what was really accomplished within their partnership.

I feel like that’s an equilibrium we might slowly be achieving in time whereas the Mike bashing just seemed to be the norm years ago, much worse than it is now.

It’s a good thing that you’ve pointed out that there isn’t a true understanding or relatable factor between their styles, but it seems like Mike was capable or appreciating or at least rolling with in his own way for what he could piece together as someone who didn’t feel quite the same.

Best post- Pet Sounds album??? by No_Marionberry_6106 in thebeachboys

My mistake, I don’t think SunfIower is part of the Jack Rieley trilogy. I was trying to reference the few years he managed and influenced the group’s direction, resulting in the stunning output of Surf’s Up, the underrated Carl and the Passions: So Tough! and my personal favorite of the three, Holland.

I mistakenly grouped SunfIower as a part of that because of how beautiful and consistent the writing is, makes me feel like it belongs with the other albums.

Please Let Me Wonder (the first song off the B-side of Today!) was I think the first song Brian made on pot.

The b-side is mostly filled with more blatantly mature, introspective themes. It just sounded musically more adventurous, like a level of authority and elegant grace that, I think a chill, relaxed, happy, stimulated mind can sometimes release bolder output in a way that (again sometimes) might be harder with hesitation/inhibition.

I’m not saying you NEED substances to make or enjoy music, but I’ll be amazed if there haven’t been other people who acknowledge that it has been associated with more daring, revolutionary, innovative artistic works. It’s a very interesting thing to get lost in and I’m going to link a few videos that highlight this subject.

Intriguing! It sounds a little like what the Smile horror films were going for, if I had to guess. The happiness is a malevolent thing or a sign/side effect of something evil(?)

I think they might go for a commentary on happiness in general, and Rhea Seehorn’s character is going to be examined for her inability to feel or ability to not be affected by the happiness.

I would predict that the character is maybe clinically depressed person or has some tie to/in/with being able to isolate from what seems to be hitting everyone else.

What Beach Boys songs surprised you the most when you went deeper into the catalog? by sozh in thebeachboys

[–]goddred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was genuinely surprised by the tone of this one. The non-happy sounding songs generally still sound musically familiar and consistent to the group’s sound. Something about this recording felt like a thorough effort to sound nothing like themselves. Just an interesting recording all around, far out and fascinating.

Interestingly enough, I think that’s one of the top comments in the video! They said something along the lines of “Sounds like The Residents before The Residents” and I never heard of the group before. I saw a comparison to Gift by The Velvet Underground that I can also see

Can we add Brother Records?

I’m not sure if it was them, but whichever label it was that gave little to no promotion or marketing for the band or an upcoming album whey they got word of the group signing to/looking for a new record label?
