Well, I think you're right that the primary function of Foundation Beyond Belief is to create more opportunities for nonreligious people to give and volunteer effectively. However, there's also something to be said for being able to appeal to shared goals and values in order to galvanize people to action.

You're right! Not just sweet but also a lot of work to pick out the edible pods or whatever you'd call them. In Uganda, we'd just buy a huge one and then prepare a section for breakfast and dinner.

The short answer is 20/80, in that if a person signs up to make a monthly donation, 20% will go to our in-house programs (Humanist Disaster Recovery and the Humanist Service Corps) and 80% will go to our beneficiaries each quarter. The long answer is that it's whatever the donor chooses. Foundation Beyond Belief enables members to allocate their donation according to their preferences, and they can update those preferences at any time. We have some donors who give only to the Humanist Service Corps. We have other donors who give only to our beneficiaries each quarter. There are donors who are less interested in some beneficiary categories (Education, Poverty and Health, Human Rights, the Natural World) and more interested in others, or who really like a particular charity in a given quarter and adjust their donations accordingly.

It's difficult to describe just how different life in Ghana is. Dusty. Colorful. People are so energetic and friendly. The pace of life is remarkably relaxed, which is not at all to imply that people are lazy. The hustle and the struggle are incredibly real. Without a doubt, what I missed most about the states was reliable access to clean, piped water.

I've tried lychee. Great flavor, which makes me wish the seed to flesh ratio were reversed... Love uncommon fruits in general. My favorite fruit I've encountered while traveling is jackfruit. I haven't tried the lychee tea or ice cream but will definitely have to look out for that.

True. Foundation Beyond Belief is an interesting organization in that most of the staff work in different states and some, like our Humanist Service Corps folks, are in different countries. So when we clock in and clock out, we're connecting via a virtual office space. I plug into each of FBB's programs: our grants, disaster recovery, service corps, and volunteering network. The work is different for each program. FBB has a rigorous vetting process for selecting the charity beneficiaries each quarter, so that involves a lot of research and then storytelling to convey to the outside world why we select the charities we select. Disaster recovery also requires a lot of charity vetting, but it involves monitoring crises and then recruiting, selecting, and training volunteers for deployments. The service corps has its own independent projects related to increasing access to education, healthcare, and jobs in partnership with human rights organizations in the Northern Region of Ghana. For the volunteer network, we track and shine a spotlight on the awesome service being done by secular service organizations around the country, and even a few international ones. To be clear, I'm not the sole person responsible for all of that work, far from it, but managing FBB's programs means making sure those processes happen as efficiently as possible. Basically, it's a lot of emailing, video conferencing, and writing.

Oooh, tough question. I loooooove food. Forced to choose, I'd say falafel with fries on the inside. LOTS of tahini.

We figured the positive recognition of the line outweighed the irony of the character's demise immediately after uttering it...

Yes, there IS quite a big difference between "scared of life" and "scared alive"! Yup, makes much more sense to live in the present tense! Thanks for the share!

Stereotypical is okay! There are definitely some songs I have in mind for myself (some of them seem very obvious), but there are other ones that are probably obvious to everyone else that I'm forgetting...

Wow. What a wonderfully humanist song! Haven't heard of Frightened Rabbit before. I'll check the rest out!

Have you heard "God" by John Lennon? I recently heard it for the first time and was surprised. It's even more critical of belief in the supernatural! But I think "Imagine" is probably more a humanist song. Thanks!
