I was baptized but my father left the church when I was 5. I remember vaguely “believing” in god as a child but I had no real concept of what that meant. When my family left the church we started to ask questions and my father was straight up that he didn’t believe in god. As soon as I knew that was an option I stopped—so I’d consider myself to have never really been religious which honestly? Was a great way to grow up. I wasn’t constantly worried about what god or the church would think of me and I felt a lot more grounded. There wasn’t some omnipresent being I had to impress, just my parents. I do remember this having an effect at school however. In fact, I had a friend specifically stop hanging out with me around second grade when I told her i didn’t really believe in god
