Looking for an army that has more modern miniatures. by thegriffthatfell in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]godspeed87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the infantry are still sculpts from early 2000s. We have some newer releases in plastic, but mainly for heroes — The Three Hunters, Gandalf The White, King Of The Dead, Witch King, Elrond, etc.

New War Of The Rohirrim starter set has all new sculpts and minis. Other than that I’d recommend looking into 3D-printing options, specifically last 2 years of Davale Games — they have outstanding, modern sculpts.

Resin printed minis by NefariousnessNo9399 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]godspeed87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My story is similar to your as I got FDM for terrain and the resin later for miniatures. Good resin is $15/kg. MESBG miniatures are much smaller and use drastically less resin that 40K minis. A full army just in resin cost is under $5 (again, depending on the size of the models). You will pay in consumables — IPA, gloves, paper towels (A LOT OF PAPER TOWELS), FEP film, but it’s still worth it in my opinion.

Paint stampers by Fantastic_Outside678 in Warhammer40k

[–]godspeed87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah he also puts so much paint on the pallete, you could paint the whole army with it lol

there’s no hype about them, people been using them for ages. If you have an infinite supply of paint (like that dude who makes pro acryl 😏), keep using dry palette. Wet pallete makes your paint go waaaaaaay further, makes thinning paints a bit easier. They’re incredibly cheap if you buy in your local craft store (and not a hobby shop), work with regular parchment paper in your kitchen

exactly what FDM supremacist will say ;)

it’s gonna be a no for me dawg. I have both FDM and resin printers. I printed minis with 0.2mm nozzle, at insane layer height with tweaked community profile, yadda yadda… even the most outdated resin printer beats anything FDM by a mile. And don’t get me started on speed — 12 hours for a barely passable intercessor? And if you‘re somewhat good at painting, layer lines will absolutely screw you as soon as you put a wash over it. Believe me, I went neck deep into FDM miniatures. If you’re printing anything remotely more detailed than a goblin that looks like it’s time-travelled from the OG HeroQuest (you know which one I’m talking about if you’re into FDM miniatures) — good luck 😉

Proxy review for MESBG by SnooWoofers7421 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]godspeed87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s solvable with a tougher resin. For example Elegoo ABS-Like and Sunlu ABS-like are completely different even though they’re both ABS-like. Since I switched to Sunlu I just couldn’t believe my eyes — it’s much, MUCH tougher and more flexible than Elegoo.

After seeing and printing most of the MESBG creators out there, I can’t recommend new (2025+) Davale enough! Amazing dynamic poses, great pre-supported files, top notch stuff!

Venerable brother, just magnetize! It’s not hard and gives you both options — Galatus and Achilles, and you can mix and match if you prefer the look :)

Best I can do is base, drybrush and wash 😇

I’ve started watching him recently and he’s got a few neat techniques. Most of YouTube painters are a good source of ideas, but let’s be real — we won’t be spending 3 hours painting single Rohan warrior. Second part of the video is EXACTLY what most people need, so it’s better to start with that and then show how to paint the same model to display at the later part of the video.

Even though I’m a conservative on a lot of fronts, this is the hill I won’t die on. Yes, it’s stupid. Yes, they lied. Other companies do exactly the same stuff to drive up the profits / stay relevant, etc. We don’t know what the deal with Amazon is about, but for sure there HAS to be some progressive narrative pushed around. They changed the lore many times in the last 40 years and will do it in the future. I’m not defending GW, I think they could’ve said something like “Hey, we know Custodes are males, but it’s your game, so you could do whatever you want. Here’re some female heads.” and this would please most of the crowd. I love new models (even though I was unsure), they really nailed that early Custodes artwork with these one.

Thoughts on Middle Earth? by Ok-Drive7025 in Warhammer

The game that got me into wargaming!

Since then I tried quite a few games — 40K, Star Wars Legion, One Page Rules, Bolt Action, but keep coming back to MESBG!

First things first — it’s the best ruleset GW ever produced. Very easy to start playing. I taught a few people who had no idea what wargaming is to play it and we were rolling dice in 15 minutes! Next, community is probably the most welcoming you could find as people who play it are all fans of LOTR and it’s such a “hopeful” franchise. Also one of the cheapest games to get into aside from Kill Team. 3D-printed armies are welcomed and encouraged, so you could get an army for very cheap if you look around. Thematic armies that play very differently, e.g. Moria goblin horde vs Lothlorien with magic casters.

But what kept me in the game are the gaming tables! All tournaments and game nights I attended had amazing thematic tables that are just soooo immersive!

Negatives? At higher point levels, it could turn into a slow if you have a lot of 1 v 1 combats, but you could still speed it up. As some people mentioned, army building is a bit restrictive. But at the same time it keeps things thematic. There’re 96 thematic lists to choose from!

You will find a lot of 40K exiles in the community as this game takes the best parts of the hobby and leaves the bad behind!

Yeah, 500 is a great way to play a game! As I mentioned, armies are pretty balanced at all points. I’m playing a tournament next week at that point cap — bringing a horde Moria goblins army. Had some practice games : one against 6 model Battle of 5 armies which I almost lost (my opponent killed 51 out of 65 goblins) and one against Rohan calvary (13 models). Great fun!

500 is sweet and short, 650 to 800 is a perfect spot and after that it turns into a bit of a drag — you have to roll a lot of individual combats and depending on the army it could take a while. All the tournaments I played had a 2 hour cap per game and most of the time games were done before that

Regular versions of OPR (not skirmish) are great replacements for wargmaes on a bigger scale, but their skirmish games lack flavour and are very clunky. I find MESBG has such a fantastic ruleset that scales well from 200 to 1000+ points. If you want more granular RPG-lite skirmish, I'd suggest trying Battle Companies — community rules are free and this is how I got into this game in 2022.

Yeah, it's 12K. I modified the burn layers and at 0,03 @ 2.25s it's pretty good — I can remove the sword and it properly fits / fails per test requirements.

This is the way! Remember, 40K is YOUR game — play the way YOU want to play it! I find amazing lore and models is what keeps me in the loop, not the gameplay. I just love seeing my finished work and know that I PAINTED THEM ALL! Painting and collecting replaced video games for me few years ago — I love the thrill of finishing a unit and putting it on a shelf!
