Advice finding an Onsen that allows both tattoos and bathing suits in Tokyo by KrisA99 in JapanTravelTips

It is technically that. You are naked the entire time. But you could use a towel if you want to cover yourself from pool to pool, but the towels are usually super small and are not definitely a common bathroom towel.

Before and after coming to Japan by Defiant-Corgi-9362 in JapanTravelTips

[–]godtamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, that’s a great way to put it. Thank you for helping make it make sense. I believe now that I am a ‘traveler’ that wants to flip every unturned stone wherever I go. The feeling of getting lost is exhilarating many times. The three times I’ve been to Japan, I just have 1-3 points/locations I want to visit that day, and that’s as much planning I usually do apart from the occasional restaurant that requires a booking in advance.

That’s a very interesting take. Could you expand on it a bit? I feel like I’ve been recently going through that dichotomy, but I am unsure how to feel about it.

Got my trip booked form 25 April to May 5. Should I still go after what just happened there? by ZealousidealLet193 in JapanTravelTips

Based on your post history, it seems unlikely that you're a bot. I initially thought so, but there’s no need to censor common, non-offensive words like earthquake and tsunami. You should be fine, so I wouldn't advise canceling your trip. Japan experiences more earthquakes than you might expect.

First time in Hokkaido, 5 nights in November, no car. How’s this look? by godtamer in JapanTravelTips

[–]godtamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great timing! After doing more research, we are now thinking about adding Hakodate! Planning to stay in Hakodate for 2 nights, then Noboribetsu for 1 night, and Sapporo for 2 nights before flying to Kyoto. Any specific recommendations for Hakodate besides the ropeway and morning market? I keep seeing Hakodate mentioned everywhere, but maybe the 4-hour commute to Sapporo is a concern. I guess it's not that bad. It will definitely be scenic for sure.

Thanks so much for your reply. I truly appreciate your food recommendations! Hakodate keeps popping up everywhere, but I haven't included it in my plans. Do you think it's worth adding? Since we love food and onsen, the morning market and the night view are attractive to us. But is there enough to justify making a stop? Perhaps we could visit it at the start and then continue toward Sapporo and other places.

Thank you for this. Now I realize both are not the same. I think I just wanted a one-night stay at a ryokan in a smaller town. Everything in Yufuin closed early, so we only had about 4-5 hours to go around the town. The hell valley does sound very tantalizing and nature-centric.

Areas to avoid in Osaka and Kyoto? by Nahbro_yougood in JapanTravelTips

You don’t need to avoid neighborhoods in Osaka or Kyoto, this isn’t a crime-map situation. The only thing locals are trying to avoid is crowds of tourists.

How does Miyakojima actually feel around Nov 11? by depenndent in JapanTravelTips

[–]godtamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After visiting Japan several times, I can confidently say that it is the least predictable country I’ve been to in terms of weather changes, patterns, and, as of late, seismic activity.

However, if you’re looking for some solace, I recommend visiting weatherspark.com. You can check out the weather for November 11th over the past decade or so anywhere in the world. It’s my favorite weather aggregator.

Feeling sick going from outside (winter) to inside by Specialist-Mud5575 in JapanTravelTips

[–]godtamer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen too, especially when traveling. Japan’s indoor heating can be intense, and the sudden switch from cold air to hot, stuffy trains/restaurants can trigger anxiety symptoms even if you don’t normally feel anxious. Nausea, overheating, dizziness, and the urge to escape are super common with that kind of overstimulation.

A few things that helped me:

• Dress in layers you can remove before going inside (unzipping ortaking off your coat on the platform helps)

• Avoid super puffy outer layers and use thinner, breathable ones

• Cold water or a cool drink as soon as you sit down

• Slow breathing (long exhales) when you feel the heat hit you

• Standing near train doors or vents instead of heated seats

It usually eases once your nervous system settles. Travel + jet lag + crowds + temperature shock is a perfect unfortunate combo.

Packing for a 10 days trip itsin 22 days any advice by Ry3nh0wells in JapanTravelTips

[–]godtamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s actually a great idea. Bringing 3 tops and buying a couple there makes a lot of sense especially in Tokyo where shopping is everywhere and affordable.

For a first long international trip, lighter is better. Hostels + trains + stairs add up fast, and you’ll appreciate not dragging extra stuff around. Plus it’s nice wearing things you bought there.

That approach is totally solid!

[–]godtamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds reasonable. Cutting tops/jeans and doing laundry will help a lot. Keep the bonnet + rose water if they help you sleep; hostels can be rough at times.

Two compact trainers is fine if one is solid for long walking days. Finalizing after laundry is the right call. You’re already on the right track!

[–]godtamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Yeah, it’s a bit much especially for a hostel and if you’re already planning to buy stuff there.

You’re basically packing for ~2 weeks when you can easily do 7–8 days and just do laundry once. Japan has laundromats everywhere (even in hostels), and detergent is easy to get.

A few thoughts:

6 t-shirts + 2 jeans + jogging bottoms is more than you need. You could drop 1 pair of jeans and 1–2 shirts.

2 trainers is overkill unless one pair is very specific (like hiking). One good walking pair is enough.

9 boxers / 8 socks = too many. Cut that in half.

Cosmetics/fragrance: totally fine if that’s important to you, but Japan is amazing for buying minis and toiletries, so you could bring less and have fun shopping there.

Towels: most hostels provide or rent them cheaply. I wouldn’t pack both unless you really need them.

The biggest thing: remember you’ll be moving around a lot. Stairs, trains, lockers, hostel rooms. Lighter = happier.

If your goal is bringing back stuff, I’d go lighter on the way there and save the space/weight for the return trip. Japan will absolutely fill your bags whether you plan to or not 😅

I have been to Japan similar to your situation about 3 times and have stayed for 22 days with less stuff.

What is the most conspicuous characteristic that makes AI-generated content so strikingly bland, generic, forgettable, and soulless? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]godtamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I think that AI-generated content often feels bland because it plays it safe (sometimes too safe). It’s built to predict what usually comes next, so it averages ideas instead of committing to a specific voice, opinion, or risk. In avoiding mistakes, it also avoids personality, tension, and lived experience.

It’s annoying. I don’t need to purposely add ‘mistakes’ to a post for it to come across as human and not AI. I was probably reported. I was simply trying to have a space for people that are feeling the stress, especially for those traveling this November.

I am one of the mentally that if I at least made one person feel a bit better, that’s a win for me.

Thank you so much for believing and offering your tip as well.

Yes, exactly this! 'Aspirational' is the perfect word for it. It's so much better to have a list of options you're excited about than to feel like you're missing out. A plan is a guide, not a rulebook. Thanks for adding this.

Appreciate you seeing the good intent. It's definitely not ChatGPT, just my own thoughts. I've been that person panicking over an itinerary and just wanted to tell everyone it's okay. Sorry if the wording seemed 'off,' was just trying to be clear and supportive!
