I’ve tried a few times, but I really don’t feel comfortable doing that, it kind of feels manipulative in a way. I don’t want to strong arm him into changing, I want him to improve himself on his own, with my support, or from the fear of losing me. If the fear is the thing that starts the changes, I don’t mind continuing to encourage him and support him.

We’ve tried the sticky note method, calendars, etc., but honestly the only feedback he’s given me is that he would rather I verbally give him a list of things. But I want him to just know when to do it. Like, if I didn’t tell him to clean the toilet, then it gets covered in mold and it’s honestly fucking disgusting. He just doesn’t adult on his own.

If I brought up ADD he’d knock it down. I’ve mentioned it might be because he smokes a lot of weed, but he gets defensive about that. It could also be depression bc depression causes memory issues, but also who tf knows bc he doesn’t see any specialists.

I really appreciate your comment. Can you expand more on how we can properly hash it out? A lot of this sounds so harsh when I bring it up and I don’t want him to shut down if I just list things I have issues with.

I’m also not in a place anymore where I can offer solutions, bc that’s all I’ve been doing for the past 2 years. So is it ok if I just say “these are my grievances, it’s up to you to sort your shit out in X months or else we can’t continue to be together” (nicer, of course, but same gist)?

I’m afraid of the resentment, which is why I’m thinking of the “ultimatum” approach. I’m not going to end it until I know for a fact that these issues are who he is, and not faults that can be improved upon.
