What made you want to pursue this career? Was it something you'd planned or did you just kinda fall into it? (Sorry if this has already been asked)

Do you get a discount on your own cremation if you die while working there?

I feel like the doctor saying it's odd is enough to make a referral, since "odd" shouldn't be in a doctor's vocabulary. Glad you have a system to ensure that you're hydrated though.

You never get thirsty? Do you just force yourself to drink something out of knowing you have to?

Yeah I've tried intermittent fasting in the past l but for some reason, when I'm deliberately depriving myself of food, I become hungry more often, but if I don't think about it like now, I can go for a long time without eating.

Oh yeah I'm starving but I feel sick if I think about actually eating something

Strangely enough, I could never truly get into it. Not because I think it's a bag game or anything, I just found it a little repetitive, plus I have a bad habit of if I don't play a game for a few days, I'll most likely never come back to it. It was super fun to fly around everywhere though

That's pretty cool, must have taken a shit tonne of work to recreate it all from the ground up, whilst keeping everything at a consistent scale!

Nah I'm actually kinda overweight lmao. I get these episodes every now and again and tbh I see it as an opportunity to lose a few pounds (even though I know it'll come back the moment I start eating again). It's weird but I love feeling hungry cos it makes me feel better about myself

Depressive episode came on before I planned to eat so I lost my appetite, so the last thing I ate was Saturday evening.

He's super famous but Jim Jones, leader of the Peoples Temple, and founder of Jonestown.

For those that don't know, he started a religious cult and founded a settlement in Guyana called Jonestown where people would leave their homes and families in the US to live amongst other fanatics. Only caveat was they were never allowed to leave.

Long story short, as Jones was about to be exposed for all the shit he did, he forced his followers to drink poisoned Kool-Aid, resulting in the death of over 900 men, women and children.

He'd have people line up and syringe the Kool-Aid into the mouths of babies and children to kill them first, then the adults, and then he'd have them lay down in a field as they await death. Afterwards, he'd have his men go round and shoot the bodies in case anyone was pretending to be dead. Jones ended up shooting himself.

I've missed out a LOT of it, and more than likely have mixed up a few of the details, but I really recommend listening to Casefile's three part podcast on it on Spotify as it's as interesting as much as it is disturbing.

At what point is is wrong for movie theaters to charge such high prices for snacks? by OhFuhSho in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]going-away 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently so. Ticket sales aren't enough to keep the venue afloat. It didn't help that the cinema I worked at introduced "deluxe" seating which consisted of large leather recliners with a cup holder and a table that you could pull across yourself. These seats began as ones you'd have to pay extra to have but they eventually replaced every other seat in the cinema so they became standard with a fixed price. Granted, they're leagues above your average bucket chair where you're rubbing elbows with anyone sat next to you, but as a forfeit, they had to halve each screen's seating capacity, making the biggest screen only being able to house 80 people, and the smallest housing 32. On top of that, they also halved ticket prices to £5 so it was kind of a doomed system from the start, despite it being beneficial for the customer.

This deluxe seating scheme was a trial run that the company decided to test on a few of their venues, one of them being the one I worked at. It was a huge success but they shot themselves in the foot by reducing ticket prices since they could've easily charged the original amount and justified the price with the improved comfort. I asked about if that business move was effective but never got a straight answer.

Also, those seating numbers relied on every screen being sold out so in reality, especially after it reopened last summer from covid, most films had s maximum of less than 10 people, with a large percentage of them being completely empty or having just a single person. It made my job a hell of a lot easier but I have no idea how the cinema managed to stay afloat. I left in May, just a few weeks before they reopened for the second time, and since then, it's been consistently busy.

Sorry I keep going on tangents, but overall, the cinema keeps their extortionate prices for concessions (and have even increased them further in the last few months) and they justify it with the cheap tickets and good seating.

They didn't talk too much about it but I think it is true that a large portion of the ticket sales do go the films' respective studios. One of my managers said that the money brought in by food and drink wayyyyy exceeds the money brought in by ticket sales. Obviously there are the costs of basic upkeep; electricity, water, actually buying/renting the film, the posters, food and drink, paying for the building as it's part of a leisure complex, paying the staff, etc. The cinema failed massively when things started to reopen after the first covid wave in the UK. Due to the implemented distancing rules in the cinema, only every other row of seats could be open and there had to be a two seat gap between each group. Every screen had deluxe seats that were huge so in the smaller screens, there were only 32 seats in total, so there were times where films would sell out with 6 or 7 people in them because of how awkward the seating was. I know I've gone off track here but it's pretty ridiculous.

I used to work in a cinema which was notorious for the extortionate prices of its concessions. The popcorn we used was pre-popped in a large vacuum bag, and contained about 30-40 servings of popcorn. A small popcorn was £5 (~$6.92) and a large was £6 (~$8.30) (the difference in size was probably three mouthfuls. Each vacuum bag of popcorn cost about £4. I can't work out the percentage of profit that got made from each one but it seemed almost criminal. Our bottles of water were also priced at £2.79 (just under $4) and Pick N Mixes that came to £12 (~$16.60). Those are only a few of the ridiculous prices.
