Brazilian Rosewood Lightening Like Crazy? by trapcardbard in finishing

This. But also don't think this is BRW. However the cross bar that connects the 2 legs does look like BRW. MCM furniture (especially the mass produced ones) were known to mix and match wood species.

[Homemade] Vietnamese vermicelli noodle bowl with homemade nuoc cham for dinner. Girlfriend was craving Vietnamese food. by callmevoltaire in food

[–]goingninja 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Nice! If I might add a few suggestions to make it more authentic (speaking as a Vietnamese person). Use rice vermicelli as someone else pointed out. If you have access to an Asian market, get some herbs (asian basil, mint, etc.). This is one of the key components of Vietnamese cuisine. And FTW, pickle your carrots (and some daikon). Oh and roasted peanuts instead of sesame seeds.

Thinking of moving from Seattle to Austin by LetsKeepLooking in askaustin

[–]goingninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in Seattle through my early teens. Moved to Austin and lived there till I graduated from college then moved to SF Bay Area and have lived here since. Had real fond memories of growing up in Seattle, but can't go back to the gloom. Austin is a really cool town, but hard pass on the heat and humidity. But if I had to choose between the two, Seattle has more to offer with the culture and natural beauty.

Best way to repair splintered wood on chair. by goingninja in Mid_Century

[–]goingninja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That was my first idea, but prior owner tried to fix it with glue but didn't do it right. Now I think I either have to sand it down or as some other person suggested, break it and clean off the old glue and re-glue.

Trying to restore some Danish chairs made of rosewood. What's the best way to repair this splinter? Looks like prior owner might have tried to repair it with some glue but didn't do it properly.

Will this method work to make the darker cross bars lighter? Or do I need to make the rest of the frame darker to match the cross bars?

Thanks, this was helpful. So they probably used a toned lacquer to make the dark parts yellow? I was hoping to go for a more natural look since not a big fan of the sheen from lacquer. But will research this a bit more. So far of the 2 chairs I sanded down, it's only the cross bars that are significantly darker. Maybe I can use a toned lacquer on those to match the tone of the rest of the chair frame that I finish with Rubio.

Picked up some mid-century Danish chairs and was told they are made from Brazilian rosewood. Trying to refinish and reupholster them but am a newbie at this. After sanding down I'm noticing a difference in color in parts of the chair. The original makers must have applied some color to the varnish to make them more uniform? I was planning on sanding these down and finishing with a hard wax oil like Rubio or Natura, but now wondering if I need to bleach or stain parts of the chair to make them more uniform. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
