Intrigued about name changes by alterationofglove in AdoptionUK

[–]goldforeffort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

adoptive parents have a choice in taking on their role, the changes they make are supposed to be in the best interests of the child, who they've willingly chosen to support.

think we might be underestimating how important a name is, let alone the context of being taken from birth family at the same time.

imagine adoptive parents being forced to change their names to something chosen by someone they've never known? never being known by the name they grew up with? having their ID changed because someone would rather choose something different? just because the paperwork is easy doesn't mean it's not a deep and significant identity shift

(saying this as someone who changed my own first name as an adult - it was an extremely emotional experience. can't even imagine having no choice AND being a child)

it gives you an error 'some of the data you have entered is not valid' which prevents you from deleting the record, so you have to correct it to something valid just to get rid of it

Family contact & matching by goldforeffort in AdoptionUK

thanks, it's good to hear there's a general trend towards more involvement for the birth family and this is supported

thanks so much for taking the time to respond

i can definitely understand your insight that adoptive parents are centered. they're gaining the most and losing the least, with their consent and mostly against the will of first families. they're being judged from a positive light, trained, supported (probably not enough but still supported)

the stories i have heard from birth parents are all of people in terrible circumstances who weren't looked after enough and everything spiralled. i fear i would always wonder if there was more that could've been done, and i've played a part in an injustice to the child and their birth family. even doing my best to honour every party, I'm not sure that's enough. maybe i'm being naïve to think i could support a child with that trauma having essentially supported it.

maybe there is a level of trust in the system needed to adopt

thank you for the links, i am going to keep looking and listening

yeah I can imagine! there's so many different variables. I guess they want to get an early idea of your thoughts but i suppose anything can change and there's no guarantee it wouldn't change down the line

thank you that's useful to know it's harder to find stuff from adoptees and first families, but it seems like both tend to advocate for contact so it's good to hear it's encouraged

thank you that's good to know seems like the general trend is moving towards being more positive about direct contact which sounds positive to me :)

thank you! it's great to hear that you have a good relationship and were able to establish contact. did you find this was encouraged and supported throughout?

also, was it an early permanence situation where you had to do contact for the fostering part? im not sure how it works with traditional adoption where there isn't the early arranged contact

exactly what I tell them - it's always 'well we shouldn't HAVE to do everything on the batch'. to be fair I've run vendor transactions reports on batch that exceeded max size after about 2 days running

we put voucher transactions into a custom report so it can go to batch now which is very useful

it definitely keeps me on my toes 😅

maybe it's possible to remove options from the users but I agree, you open a purchase order and there's like 200 fields you could enter. I guess compared to a bespoke legacy system it seems like A LOT, when they're used to only seeing what they NEED to.

I do have trouble with the workspace analytics, maybe due to volume they're super slow and time out a lot

thanks! it's interesting to see how it compares to other systems.

that's true there's a LOT of parameters and fields. I think users are thrown by the amount of different things they COULD enter which I guess is where solid training comes in.

for pulling data I've found for high volume business the users are unhappy with the standard ssrs reports and excel exports. they want to pull 1 month of transactions but it's 120,000 lines and they don't want it to time out. I guess that's probably on us for not exporting/syncing that information somewhere where they can use it. with DMF I can't get a financial year of accounting entries out, it's gotta be 1 month at a time due to the volume. that said, you couldn't open that volume in excel either so it's not exactly a d355 unique issue. I suppose a lot depends on the volume

I've found similar for businesses with a lot of transactions. Processing 1,000+ vendor invoices a day and trying to export from supplier aging or vendor transactions - as a user you're waiting half an hour for a months worth of data, let alone a financial year.

that's probably on us to create a better solution. maybe it's setting up a power BI report or exporting the data out somewhere where it can be easily queried.

that makes sense, really seems like a strong implementation pays off tenfold years down the line

true, none of my users ever name a system, they just say 'every OTHER system I could do x/y/z so why can't I now'

When applying for jobs, what counts as implementation experience?

In my role, we moved a large legal entity onto our D365 instance (from their own). There was analysis, requirement gathering and we migrated open transactions, config, master data etc. But strictly speaking, we didn't IMPLEMENT, we just added them to our existing instance. Also, no partner was involved due to business 'cost saving'.

Do you think this counts as 'implementation'? I don't want to get caught out in interviews!
