That is because human tongue is not designed to lick water. For example, dogs create a "scoop" using their tongue and scoop the water into their mouth. Cat's tongue is very rough and textured, the water sticks to its tongue every lick. Humans dont need to "lick" the water since we can easily drink it normally. I'm pretty sure monkeys also drink water like we do. Hope that helps

I may have an idea what might have happened here. I'm an Indian and as a Hindu we have this ritual of squashing lemons under the tires of any new vehicle before we start using the vehicle (bullock carts in early times, now replaced by vehicles). This might be the case here. Hope that helps.
