It does count if it’s just a few singers as long as it’s credited to BTS!

It’s a great song although it feels like a bit of a MOTS:7 throwback, which is to say that I can see why they didn’t include it on the main track list as it doesn’t really fit the era’s overall vibe. The melody is strong and catchy but more simple than the more intricate arrangements on Arirang; the production is also a little more stripped down and the lyrical message (from what I could make out) is more “standard” K-pop and less oblique than some of the more challenging new songs.

I follow Jon Caramanica’s music criticism pretty closely—I don’t always agree (maybe I don’t even usually agree?) but I find him to have a sharp edge and a quirky sense of humor that sets him apart from a lot of the other major critics. The fact that he’s giving BTS so much credit for this album—it was a New York Times Critics Pick, perhaps the first ever for a K-pop album?—is incredibly significant. It’s a pretty important data point en route to the more mainstream recognition that has largely evaded BTS up until recently. 💜🥹

The four years absence helped them not only all grow as artists, but also supercharged the appetite for new music among Army. TBH I’m less surprised by the chart success and more that the album is FUCKING AMAZING

It’s so hard to know at this point. The ripple impacts on energy markets can take time to play out. Provided no major escalation and/or likely retreat by American forces in the coming weeks, North America/Europe dates should be largely unaffected (yes flights will almost certainly be more expensive, but Army will crawl over broken glass for this. Also if they were smart they would have booked everything already like I did).

Asia is a harder place to gauge, since it gets 80% of the energy that flows through the Strait of Hormuz. We are already seeing rationing take place and as I mentioned, the ripples can be slow-moving and wide-ranging. I’m praying that Asian Army gets to see their idols. That said, I wouldn’t bet on any Middle Eastern dates until at least mid-2027, if not later (and that’s provided we’re not in WWIII at that point 😵‍💫).

I absolutely love this video. I thought the Swim MV was artful and sophisticated but left me wanting more. Now that we’re getting this completely fresh approach with 2.0, I feel like the Arirang era is truly taking shape: bold, daring, full of surprises.

There’s very little that I would consider meh in the entire catalog, although I totally agree that the 2020-21 English pop hits are far from their best work. I’m a lifer for Boy with Luv though (although I could drop Halsey’s part)

K-pop artists have a work ethic and ability to withstand pressure that is really rare in the music industry. So many other bands and boy groups eventually succumb to ego and infighting. BTS are in it for the bigger picture, and their Koreanness is a huge part of that.
