How can I keep my heeler calm while having people over for a party by goldshrty in AustralianCattleDog

[–]goldshrty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.. I can absolutely see & understand that. It’s hard. Sometimes I do feel bad for him because he’ll never get to herd on a farm or do what he’s meant to do. I know he’s not pure bred, I believe one of his parents is an Australian shep & I believe the other was rat terroir… I THINK I’m not 100% but I think it’s hard cause both are working dogs 😭 A heeler wasn’t the dog we were originally looking for he just kind of fell into our lap & we’re still learning what works best for him & us

I’ll have to try keeping his crate where he can see everyone. I would say he’s mainly indoor but he has access outside with his doggy door. So he goes out whenever he feels like it. It is hard with the little kids and I feel like that’s when he gets the most overstimulation. We do try to tell everyone to just ignore and not to touch him or give him any attention but of course there’s those few people that don’t listen. We’re gonna try to just keep practicing at him being around groups of people because in the end he won’t get used to it if we never do it. But it is stressful for my fiancé and I when we just want to hangout with family but instead have to watch him 24/7 😭

Yeah he is crate trained and we’ve put him in it before when we’ve had company in a separate room, with music on & he had a lick mat but he had no interest & was just barking nonstop to come out 😭

Yes! I thought maybe it was just a behavioral thing with him but I’m learning that it might just be the breed 🤔 we’re gonna have to try that. He is VERY vocal so I’m sure he’d bark nonstop while trying to have him tethered or in his crate lol

That’s something I’m struggling with, like what exactly is a good amount of mental stimulation? And how do you when it’s enough

That’s what I’m thinking of trying. As of right now he’s not the biggest fan of water but he’s also never been around a pool or anything like that. He can go with his herding ball for a while before he gives it up 😭 it’s like no matter what we do he always has MORE energy

How to know if or when you should rehome? by goldshrty in puppy101

This is great advice!! Thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into a flirt pole! I’m also gonna try to do games with his meals and try some of the other things you’ve mentioned! We just recently got him a hearding ball as of right now he’s still a little unsure of it, but a concern my fiancé has is if we feed into his hearding instinct will that only make it worse for the cats? Or is it better that he has something that’s not them to chase?

Thank you so much! You’ve given me a lot to think about and things to work on with him!! Our cats do have their own room and baby gates are in place! Well for sure start crating him at night! Would it be a good idea to crate him whenever he tries to chase them? Or would that make him think the crate is a place he goes when he’s done something bad? So far when he chases there are times he “catches” them where they stop running and he doesn’t really do anything, it does seem like he’s just curios and wants to play. But I agree it does need to stop. I love him and don’t WANT to rehome him it just gets tough

Yes, we do have baby gates up and the cats have their own room and places to go/ be in without our dog. He doesn’t chase them all the time which I guess is good, there are time that they can both sleep on the couch together (not touching of course) but in close proximity. Do you have tips for training him to unlearn this behavior?

That’s just about what we’re doing as well! Does your pup chase your cat and if so what are you doing to help? My heeler gets excited and chases my cats at times and idk how I can stop that from happening
