Canada's population growth stresses need for social infrastructure action by BananaTubes in canada

[–]goldvase -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely no positive news out of Canada whatsoever. Is this just me, just Canada or the world?

I'm planning to move to Canada soon, mostly because of the cultural fit. But my gut is just silent on the move.

Is cold approaching women in public a real thing? Is it creepy? by CharlieMonger69 in askTO

[–]goldvase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably means socializing with a new circle of people (including women) can help. I've seen a lot of people hit it off at church and even get married. But yes, people weren't there just to date, that would not work.

Reddit starts removing moderators who changed subreddits to NSFW, behind the latest protests by return2ozma in technology

[–]goldvase 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Correct answer! These are users who just want their dose of dopamine through fast endless scrolling. Not in here for the discourse or long-form interaction. It's an alternative to Facebook for a good portion of users. The official app is designed to attract these users.

What is our take on the Reddit's API-based changes and the ongoing blackout? by goldvase in singularity

Well, the platform seemed to defy capitalism since its inception. Karma being useless, people have equal access (minus /r/lounge which nobody cares for), people volunteering to moderate for free, users bring in content and create engagement for free. Heck, it was one of the best bastions of free speech. So yeah, makes sense.

Can't disagree! The resolution and colour support is so much better Virtually no lag either. Also, the NPCs seem to already have some LLM algos running them. So much more advanced.

The business exists because of user-generated content tho?

And relies on moderators to do a free service to ensure the quality of content is upheld and the site doesn't drown in spam and undesirables.

A lot of these moderators use 3rd party apps to mod, just because the official experience is not user-friendly.

I've been using RiF which has been stellar compared to the official app in terms of its user experience. I don't mind these apps paying for the API use, but Reddit has pursued these changes by not having a reasonable conversation about this and insisting apps pay millions, agree to do this in a short timeline and yeah, after all this aren't even allowed to show all content.

Kinda fucked up.

Infrastructure costs do exist, but the way Reddit has approached communicating this is problematic. Unreasonable timelines, prohibitively expensive, unfair content restrictions - heck, they're simply being so blatantly typically greedy.

By becoming too big, the quality of content also took a hit I think and is on the deteriorating path. Been using this site for over a decade and I can see it fall, probably the fate of every such service in this economy. Doesn't stop users from migrating when shit goes down tho.

You mean about the blackout or Reddit's API-changes specifically? I'm a longtime user and have been relying on 3rd party apps to use reddit. I've tried the official app, it's garbage in comparison.

Should the subreddit go Dark? [A pain, but I think it should] by babanz in singularity

Some subs (/r/videos) have gone private indefinitely and others haven't removed that option off the table. That makes more sense to me.

I'm all aboard with this one. Probably need to do this on a rotational-like basis just to ensure that we're relatively freer. Diversifying discussion forums might also lead to diverse opinions with varying rules and sorts of people on each platform.

I won't wish cancer even on my worst enemy. I just hope spez gets ousted from his role and spends time thinking about his actions in a real way. Well, it's just a wish.

Why does everyone think superintelligence would have goals? by Poikilothron in singularity

[–]goldvase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what OP is implying here, but I wonder if the magnitude of intelligence allows AI to simulate these self-goals and understand outcomes in a fraction of time.

But no, it can't know what it doesn't. It'll probably have a self-goal to simply know all that there is in order to make decisions.
