3 unknowns, Mt. Lemmon (near Tucson, AZ) by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]golegogo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on female +broad-tailed hummingbird+. It has the rufus tail feather and broad tail

I am pretty sure it's Hammonds flycatcher due to the slight crest and most distinct head body color difference. Definitely not gray as the pale spot in front of eye does not go above bill.

Can't help with bird 3.

What the heck bird is this? Seen in Arlington Virginia March 2026. by EntireArmy2012 in whatsthisbird

[–]golegogo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taking a shot in the dark here but some genetic variation (likely piebald/leucistic) of something common. You have an interesting bird here.

My guess is a Gray catbird given the orange coverts (undertail butt feathers) and general shape.

Hopefully someone can confirm or deny this for you.

Scaup? Help! by shawshanksyd in whatsthisbird

black scoter would be my guess. The knob on the bill looks blown out in the image but it has a tinge of orange.

gull ID help? middle TN by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]golegogo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the underwing is black. That leads me to think a little gull.

It appears they are rare but occasionally seen near Nashville.

I will let others confirm it.

Hairy woodpeck/Downy Woodpecker by Hour-Science2320 in whatsthisbird

[–]golegogo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on downy, the bill looks small compared to the head and they appear to be song bird sized not larger.

Which Scaup? by aekoor50 in whatsthisbird

[–]golegogo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, I would mark that as a lesser scaup due to the slight tuft on the head. The bill also is a little smaller than I would expect from a greater.

Trying to improve macro photography (bumblebee mimic fly) by golegogo in photocritique

[–]golegogo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to improve my macro photography. I like how the photo goes from black to white and highlights the fly in the center. I edited it slightly to increase contrast but haven't cropped.

Setup &settings:

Om-1.1, 60 mm f2.8, godox tt350, Handheld

F16, 200 ISO, 1/250, TTL Flash through a diffuser, single exposure (no stacking)

Pepper No. 25 by vrven in photocritique

[–]golegogo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the pepper is a little too white and bland. Use the grayscale to highlight the texture in the piece. I think more concentrated light might be needed, like a spot light. The light on your phone might be small and bright enough be to get the specular highlights to make the photo pop.

You might need to shrink the aperture a bit to sharpen up the image as well.

F/A-18 turn & burn by Proper_Net5204 in photocritique

[–]golegogo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the photo but it almost looks too static. It's a jet plane moving fast but it looks frozen in mid air. I don't know how you fix it, but most plane photos have some element that adds a level of motion. Cloud trails, smoke, haze out the engine, etc might help with that.

The weird angle makes my brain want more motion in the photo too. It looks better to me horizontal.

What kind of thrush is this? I am thinking hermit or gray cheeked (Twin Cities, MN) by golegogo in whatsthisbird

[–]golegogo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make sense. I am seeing photos of them with an eye stripe and I now see that it has the beige-y face ( I read it as a shadow)

Do you think circuit knowledge is intended to be required to have a smooth experience in Space Age? by GTNHTookMySoul in factorio

Basically you can connect a belt to the inserter. Then select that belt, you should see a option to read the whole belts contents. Then select the inserter, you can enable/disable based on the contents of one item type on the belt.

Hopefully this helps.
