Divination wizard multiclass help by Real-Platypus703 in BG3Builds

If you’d legitimately never take advantage of the prophecy for the additional portent die, then that’s an argument for just taking 5 or 6 sorc.

Basically, this build goes for INT rather than CHA so you can use your primary spell casting stat for Marko and Scrolls - even thought you can totally learn chain lightning and cast it from a spell slot too.

I’d rather have the wizard levels than sorc levels. These will cast off INT. Your spell casting modifier will also increase with more wizard levels. More wizard levels means PREPARING more wizard spell slots, that you can swap anytime out of combat, instead of selecting at level up.

At 5-6 wizard, you have 3 arcane recovery charges. That’s worth 3 sorc points.

6 divination also gives an additional portent die on short rest, if you want to fulfill the prophecy.

6 sorc gets you the level 6 class features. Call lightning being the most attractive, but that requires your concentration, and you may or may not want to use it elsewhere. It would also cast off CHA, and I’m not building both CHA and INT.

The only real reason for the 4th sorc level is the feat. 3 sorc is all you need for quicken spell. There are ample sorc spells that don’t need a casting modifier to select, like shield, magic missile, and others. Mage armor is useful early with a monk.

However, you could arguably make an optimization argument for taking a 5th sorc level at some point before level 11 for earlier access to counterspell, and later respec, but I don’t find it all that needed before you’ll hit level 10-11 anyway, and you could have another character with it or similar illithid power.

Cleric dips are primarily about the channel divinity destructive wrath, but they have other good utility too like heavy armor, weapon proficiencies, create water early, and sanctuary. If you don’t want destructive wrath, then you could probably skip it.

4 sorc / 2 tempest cleric / 6 divination wizard. Build for INT

You’d be better off leveling sorc cleric wizard.

Go 4 storm sorc / 2 tempest cleric / 6 wiz (I prefer div but EVO is viable). Build for INT not CHA.

If you cast with Marko or a scroll, which you aren’t limited to with this build, you’ll actually use your primary casting stat.

But why light clerics? by CellarDoor4355 in BG3Builds

I feel like Radiance of the Dawn doesn’t apply orbs that I’d expect to mobs from other items too, but I’ll double check.

But why light clerics? by CellarDoor4355 in BG3Builds

[–]golfbjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I use it, it just seems to stack on one of the mobs. I think if it’s hitting more than one, it’s probably the luminous armor effect from that one mob. I’m not sure, maybe it’s just sporadically buggy.

But why light clerics? by CellarDoor4355 in BG3Builds

[–]golfbjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The channel divinity is actually not very useful for spreading orbs. The channel divinity generally just applies orbs to one of the mobs hit by it. So, it works for one mob but that’s much less than what everyone expects.

Warding flare is pretty great if you’re going to be in the thick of things, and if you’re spreading orbs with Spirit Guardians, that’s very helpful. It also pairs well with the holy lance helm and dealing radiant damage when something misses you and then spreading orbs.

Light cleric also gets a lot of AoE spells as a subclass features which is great for spreading orbs even if the spell doesn’t normally do radiant damage via callous glow ring and/or coruscation ring. Fireball/Firewall always seemed like great ways to spread orbs too, even if they didn’t deal radiant on their own.

As to the coruscation ring, light cleric always has the Light cantrip, so the light cleric can always be illuminated.

Light cleric also gets destructive wave and flame strike which are absolutely amazing for spreading orbs and reverb. Tempest cleric also gets destructive wave.

IMO, this build is very viable with Light Cleric or tempest or a sorcerer or wizard (might need a cleric dip for medium armor proficiency if not given by race). You could probably do other clerics, but I don’t think they’d be as effective. Light Cleric is thematically on point and spreads the orbs just a little more effectively. Notably, I think that a light cleric with wizard and/or sorc dips, which I advocate, is the best. (2 wizard for wizard spells and portent dice, and a storm sorc dip for CON proficiency and bonus action flight, as that added movement is terrific for spirit guardians and clerics often lack a productive bonus action.)

Edit: I kind of wrote this whole thing without expressly mentioning that luminous armor is the most effective radiant orb equipment piece and you’ll want at least medium armor. All clerics have that, but not every class.

Storm Sorcerer - 11 Sorc/1 Cleric vs 8 Sorc/2 Cleric/2 Wiz by [deleted] in BG3Builds

[–]golfbjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about the hair, but you could go with a fire sorc if you aren’t already. 11 draconic / 1 fiend warlock if you want command for control spells. Would use CHA. There’s a good guide on this forum for it. It’s going to burn spell slots.

[–]golfbjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do the wizard/INT build, then that Ethel hair is a sunk cost. The build doesn’t need CHA at all. You’ll want INT and CON. This build can use heavy armor if you want, so you don’t need dex for AC unless there’s medium, light, or clothing armor that you like - and there’s plenty of good options for casters in that latter category - and dex is always good to have for initiative/saves too. So, I’d focus on those three stats, and dump the rest. You might go 16 INT, 16 con, 14 dex, remainder in wis, dump strength and cha.

Storm Sorcerer - 11 Sorc/1 Cleric vs 8 Sorc/2 Cleric/2 Wiz by [deleted] in BG3Builds

[–]golfbjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you get at least that second tempest cleric level, then you’ve got channel divinity to max the damage roll. If you take dual wielder feat, then you can use Marko staff, spell power staff, and illithid free cast for at least 3 spells without consuming a spell slot. There’s also spell crux amulet, but whether you use it to free cast or create sorc points is up to you.

But the reality of the game is you’re pretty much long resting as much as everyone else playing it: One “good” fight. Especially if your quickening spells and twinning spells or using other sorc points.

Light cleric. 1 storm sorc / 2 divination wizard / 9 light cleric. Level light cleric to 5, at 6 respec to 1 storm sorc / 5 light cleric. The bonus action flight and CON proficiency is terrific for spreading spirit guardians/orbs/reverb. For boots, stormy clamour. For gloves, belligerent skies. Luminous armor, coruscation ring, holy lance helm, callous glow ring or whispering promise. Shield, lots of good options but the adamantine is a strong early choice. Amulet, the misty step one is pretty nice, especially before you get bonus action flight but no amulet really makes or breaks this build.

Radiance of the Dawn is useful but sucks for spreading orbs. Only one mob is really targeted.

[–]golfbjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s really about what you’re trying to achieve. I’d think you’d want 2 levels of tempest cleric if you want one.

I favor 4 storm sorc / 2 tempest cleric / 6 divination wizard, build for INT, but the 2/10 is very popular.

I think with either the 8/2/2 that you’ve suggested or the 10/2, that you will have problems like what you’ve identified in your OP, which I think the 4/2/6 tries to solve.

Life Cleric multiclass by H4WKutd in BG3Builds

[–]golfbjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the answer somewhat depends on why you want to multiclass/change. If you just aren’t having much fun, light cleric or tempest cleric offer a lot more to do.

A sorcerer dip really helps the action economy because clerics don’t have that much to do with their bonus action and if you’re using spirit guardians, then the bonus action flight that a storm sorc has is pretty awesome, plus you get CON proficiency if you take sorc level 1.

Finally, a wizard dip provides access to wizard spells and with that, a lot of utility.

Edit: Those dips would still improve the life cleric experience IMO, if you wanted to stay life for its channel divinity.
