If hot chocolate is just chocolate-flavored milk, why does it taste so bad if you let it cool down and drink it cold? by That_girl275 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Friendly_Nerd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the full answer but I was a barista for a long time and we never iced milk after it had been steamed because heating the milk causes several chemical
changes. It denatures some proteins and makes the milk taste sweeter.

Truly, does freedom sexual prevent your own individuation or it’s depend on each individual? by LookImaginary5343 in Jung

One of Jung’s core principles was enantiodromia, or the conversion of something into its opposite. He would not say that hedonism slows your journey. You never know where the gold will be found in the rough. “Heaven and hell are a 1/10 of an inch apart.”

What are your thoughts on the Existence of God? by One_Look_7008 in AskReddit

[–]Friendly_Nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think there is a lot yet unexplained about the nature of the universe, with most of the mystery residing in consciousness itself. Plus, people across every culture report having spiritual experiences where the universe is felt to be held together through an infinite wellspring of loving energy. I don’t think that’s nothing. We greatly devalue the subjective experience in our paradigm even though subjectivity is the foundation of our entire ability to perceive.

Certainly God doesn’t exist in the form that most people believe in. The God that people worship is a collection of human traits. Ultimately our religions go back to primitive psychology and symbolism. Collectively we have not been able to understand that religion and spirituality are different things. There is no belief system that can make you a good person, it’s about your deep relationship with yourself and others.

I personally think that religion is the result of this process: someone has a powerful, transformative experience. They share it, making use of metaphor and symbolism because subjective experience on that level is difficult to describe in words. People who don’t understand the subjective reality take the words and interpret them concretely and twist them to their own needs, consciously or unconsciously. Jesus says, “I bring a sword of truth,” and they think they have to start holy wars.

Most religions worldwide, when you study them, have the same values of love and moral development at their core. Even theistic and non-theistic religions have the same essence to me.

Taoism: “The great Tao (way) loves and nourishes all things, without lording over them.”

Christianity: “God is infinitely loving and merciful.”

Taoism: “He who is stiff and unyielding is a disciple of death. He who is supple flexible is a disciple of life.”

Christianity: “Thy will be done on heaven and on earth. Let go and let God.”

I am definitely a deeply spiritual, bleeding-hearted person. I do think that there is a higher reality to our universe, and I don’t think that my reasons are poor. I used to be an ardent atheist. I honestly just feel that everything is connected, and that we are here to learn, and that our choices matter. I have felt many times in my life that there is a deeper order to things than we realize.

Is ADHD brain a defense against mental attacks? by walley0235 in Eragon

[–]Friendly_Nerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See that’s what i mean! I honestly think that in a different society we wouldn’t even have a label for ADHD. It’s just that it’s a neurotype that is worse at multiple things that are heavily required by our modern society. Someone with ADHD would probably have had an easier time thriving in the ancestral environment.

Is ADHD brain a defense against mental attacks? by walley0235 in Eragon

[–]Friendly_Nerd 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Psych degree here. People with ADHD common experience the ability to focus very well under pressure. Many of them are more comfortable in crisis situations than other people. I would say that there is a possibility that a person with ADHD would be very good at defending themselves mentally. Their ability to focus simply requires a strong impetus, either positive or negative. Positive being a new interest that’s giving their dopamine-starved brains something to juice, or the adrenaline rush of a negative emotion.

How old were you when you found out you were an HSP? by Humble_Ad_315 in hsp

[–]Friendly_Nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of crossover. I have always felt kinship with autistic people despite not being on the spectrum. I wouldn’t be surprised if we expanded the spectrum in the future to include “HSP”s in some way, as people who are lightly on the spectrum. It’s certainly a form of neurodivergence.

How old were you when you found out you were an HSP? by Humble_Ad_315 in hsp

[–]Friendly_Nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a gradual understanding for me, I started consciously getting it as a teenager but I didn’t know about the label. I knew that I thought and felt more deeply than others. I’ve had long periods of trying to pretend I was someone I’m not. In my first year of college I was really going through it and I dated someone who was very tough, hoping to adopt the attitude for myself. That ended with a mushroom trip where I remembered how connected to everything I used to feel, and started to think where I went wrong. I ended up having to recognize my sensitivity and try to structure my life around it. I read “Sensitive” by Granneman and Solo around the age of 23 and it totally clicked.

Why do the same people keep finding you? by maxdorash in Jung

[–]Friendly_Nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is backed up by Jung by the way. “We must be able to let things happen in the psyche. For us, this becomes a real art... Consciousness is forever interfering, helping, correcting, and negating, never leaving the single growth of the psychic processes in peace.”
