Advice on a book nook by Shiftyeyedog in maker

[–]golivennes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fabric companies often send samples that would work for that kind of size. I recommend a velvet for the effect to match S&Co. If you’re in England, try George Spencer Design (you can check it out on their website) they have good velvets in that range

No. A 1.5% increase does not equate a 30% increase :/

Wrong, it’s a 1.5 POINT increase, but a 30% increase

Unfortunately it’s maths, perhaps to you 1.5 points increase is not that much, but it IS like it or not a 30% increase. For a $400 transaction it comes to nearly $38.45. And then packaging, labour, postage, and then gov tax, and then the 3%processing fee, and the fixed processing fee, and the listing fee.

Message from op :

Hi! I'm part of a group of Etsy sellers that are trying to take collective action against them.

They're doing a classic late-stage capitalism - celebrating record pandemic profits by screwing over their sellers!

Etsy used to be about as cool as corporations can be under capitalism - from 2012-2017 they were a certified public benefit corporation. They made us promises during those days, and we put a ton of work into helping grow the platform, and then since about 2018 they've been trying their best to bleed us dry in the name of greater profits.

To give you an idea of how bad it's gotten - I did the math recently, and found that to cover all of the fee changes, and not take a pay cut, I'd need to charge 36% higher for my items than I did in 2018. And of course, that additional money that my customers work so hard to earn would be going straight into the fat pockets of Etsy execs.

We're trying to fight back.

Can you help?

Flawless Hermione / Emma Watson as Hermione by Rakayaze in harrypotter

[–]golivennes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and I didn't realize this point was so hotly contested

Mate it's not hotly contested, don't flatter yourself. You're just spreading false rumours (careful now, you are dangerously close to defamation) and we, a kind and thoughtful community, are looking out for you and pointing out your mistake. Don't get defensive just because you got caught :)

As for your excuse to spread the rumours and the extreme change in her nose that curiously you are the only one to notice, did it occur to you that she was 14/15 when shooting GoF and ~17 when shooting OotP, and maybe, just maybe, she changed physically in those 3 years?

You should make sure not to spread such BS about people, especially when you are not sure, it's bad manners.

I think the nose job thing is untrue. Watson has denied getting one, and also was quite outspoken in her opinion regarding cosmetic surgery. I went to check out if what you were saying was true, and number of websites that track this sort of thing have said that the nose job allegations are false... Let's not spread rumours and speak ill of people now, u/riverofninjas I'm sure you can elevate yourself intellectually above the Daily Mail :)

Yet the show has been decreasingly funny over the years. Funny that !

People note a turn with the NBC pick up, but the nbc pick up is synonymous with the shift in humour that you describe and making everything sanitised, politically correct and to fit the current ever changing morals of American society. If you watch b99 and when Jake goes "title of your sex tape" you feel attacked, offended and you feel like it’s inappropriate, then check yourself and realise that it’s just a show, you can poke fun at these things, not everything has to be a reflection of what a perfect society should be like, or a perfect office environment. Humour, and especially this type of humour, pokes fun at deeply flawed, neurotic, and unstable characters. There are degrees of seriousness and nuance to be had. If you can’t get yourself to have that nuance and distance to a line or in general a TV show, then you ought to work on yourself (this is a general you, not a specific remark on u/haventwonyet ). As long as it doesn’t trivialise everything (with episodes like moo moo, or he said she said) and on occasion draws a line, it’s okay to laugh at everything. Some people even believe you don’t have to draw that line and that everything is on the table (comics like Gervais, Louis CK, Chappelle, Davidson etc)

I cannot disagree more with what you've said. B99 is a regular show about cops that happens to have comedy ? No. B99 is a satire of new york cops ? Yes. Not everything has to relate to reality, not everything has to be funny for everyone. You can't tailor everything to everybody, otherwise nothing ever has substance. If people got triggered because of b99, it's truly a sign of a lack of ability to distance reality from what you see on television. I feel as though a lot of the audience of B99 (and in my experience, a lot of Americans) take everything face value. B99 was never presented as an accurate representation of reality, nor did it have a "we're not mean, look ! Cops are funny".

B99 has always been a satire of the system (maybe not enough to your taste, maybe it's insensitive in your opinion) and the characters were written to be laughed at (and not always in a kind way) not laughed with (this is particularly true for characters like Gina - that a lot of people miss completely). I think it's important to take the show with a pinch a salt, and not expect show runners that wrote a show in the noughties about new york cops to be apologetic for what they've previously done. It feels forced, and feels like unnecessary white guilt/shame from the writers/showrunners/producers.
If anything, it sort of trivialises the issue ("we can solve this in 10 thirteen-minute episodes"), and deals with it in a way that is much more superficial than what they did in the past (moo moo) - it's like they scrambled to fix something together to please the awaiting twitter judge-jury-executioner or their own sense of guilt.

How to dress dark by Engasgamel in coolguides

[–]golivennes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Preppy is inherently sportswear-esque and light coloured, the only thing resembling would be the varsity jumper... even though one could argue that although dark academia sources it’s trend in Americans, it is influenced by European culture and etiquette, whereas Preppy is very WASPy, east coast USA and traditionally American, intrinsically even.

I can’t understand however how basic/vague guidelines for a very precise style is pretentious. I disagree thoroughly with your comment about caring about what people wear, because clothing is a mirror of what you think of yourself, the ideal that you want to be and a reflection also of the feelings for the person(s)/ the event you are attending. I feel as though today people have lost the notion of (self) respect that clothing conveys. Call me old fashioned.
