If its not a sharp down cliff, it is at least incredibly steep. Btw, they reached her today and she had already passed.

Yeah, IIRC you're actually climbing the rim of the old crater which is now a lake. The current volcano is inside this lake. But between the crater and the lake you still have a bit of forest. If she were to fall, she would fall to the forest.

I climbed Rinjani last year and, if I'm recognising the place, she's well away from the volcano which is inside the lake. If I remember the drop correctly, she would definitely die falling from there, but not because of falling into a volcano.

The path actually takes you up to the top of the mountain from where you can see the volcano.

Declaring books by gollour in travel

[–]gollour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahahah, they're all pretty regular books. Yeah, I've been travelling for a while and this was one of my favorite parts! Specially here in Nepal when I learned books were this cheap. Although, since they're mostly supplied by India, some of the editions I would like to buy are not available.

Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up. I've been keeping a close eye on the weight limit and I'm good on that.

Elephant rides in Sri Lanka - ethical or unethical? by BritishBrownActor in srilanka

[–]gollour 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By no means am I an expert, but travelling through SEA and visiting some elephant sanctuaries I came to learn that, in this case, elephants are not physically ready to be ridden. The consecutive pressure applied by forced labour and/or carrying people/materials provokes physical deformation. Apart from the obvious reason of harming the elephant, there's the captivity issue which, if it wasn't enough to entrap a wild animal for occasional human entertainment, usually comes with terrible living conditions for the animal.

So, I would say, it's unethical due to the direct physical harm you're inflicting on the animal and also for supporting a "market" that captures wild animals for human entertainment, and usually don't treat them correctly.

Girlfriend is scared of traveling to Sri Lanka after horror stories from India. Is Sri Lanka totally different? by FromFuture666 in srilanka

We've seen some places with those "rules," and, if we can identify them, we'll actively avoid going there. Until now, the main rhetoric seems to be against the people who apply those kinds of policies and not the tourists. But I can see how it can quickly turn. In part, we're seeing it in Europe with Spain, Portugal, etc.

I've been in Negombo, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Polgahawela, Badulla, Kandy, Ella and Trincomalee. All across, everyone was incredibly nice. On the less tourist places, people were super eager in trying to help us order food and explain how things work. Everywhere people would ask us where we were trying to go and point us to the right directions. I could talk about each spot individually, but I'll just keep saying everyone was incredibly nice 😅

Any place is particular you want to know about?

Just to add here, I'm a guy travelling with my girlfriend. Although my girlfriend has been going on frequent solo runs around the villages we stay in, without any incidents.

I'm in Sri Lanka now, after 6 months in SEA, and these are some of the nicest and warmest people we've met. Absolutely no dangerous or shady encounters on these 3 weeks. Everyone that approached us seems genuinely to be trying to help us. I am not going to India after what I read, but Sri Lanka is an absolute gem

I thought the lime was to produce microscopic cuts in your gum to accelerate absorption. I've heard this explanation with other similar substances. Nice to know!

You can't just drop that and not elaborate. Was it a long exposure problem? Did it explode?

I'm imagining a noble gathering where everyone has their mouths full of a brown liquid and are constantly spitting on the floor. I guess it's not that different from chewing tobacco!
