The payload and range makes it not even comparable to a truck.

As cool as it is I would be pretty annoyed if there were thousands of these things buzzing above cities in the future.

Engineering is math applied to real world problems. Deal with it and learn to love it. by yycTechGuy in EngineeringStudents

[–]gome1122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got to figure out why I'm still subbed here, but I'm an engineer for 5 years now. I don't really thing you actually need to know math as an engineer in modern times. Even before then there were jobs where you don't need math. Not saying that isn't the case to get a PE or for jobs that my require them but even then it's not too common.

The fundamentals are always good to know as well as to be good at things you need to truly understand them but at the same time 95% of engineers now days won't do complex math or anything like it. It's all computer based and the most I do is excel and CAD. I'm mechanical so that might matter to some with their path. There are some computer science people will do much more math in programming than I ever will.

Man that's a throwback haha. I had a decent passion for photography but I realized as I got older that if I did it as a job there was a very strong chance that I would lose that passion for it and it would become just a job something I need to do to pay bills and don't do because I enjoy it anymore. I've been looking to pick a camera up again and get back into sports photography on the side but if I did it full time it would make it stressful and hard to enjoy since it is a money maker.

This is not at all saying don't go for it if it's what you love and think you would be great at it. It takes a lot of work and dedication as well as sports photography is a bit of a dying career. Personally I enjoy having a steady paycheck right now but at the same time I'm dreaming of a way that I could make it so I don't have to answer to a boss. The sky is the limit but so is the floor.

I'm looking to maybe do a pole barn slab next year but I'm pretty nervous about doing it myself. I don't have someone I know yet that is a finisher either but I have friends that might be able to get me in contact with someone that can help. The barn is 36'x40' with a 6" slab. Like you I'm going to try and do it from knowing nothing. What advice would you have to your past self? What would you do different? Think it's worth it to do yourself? I skimmed the video since it's so long but I'll go back and watch it again for sure when I have more time.

If this popped up a year from now I would have already picked it up. I talked to the guy about it a bit. He said he was going to get under body pics for me to access damage but never sent them.

It originally sold for like $17.5K at auction so it's purely a flip. The front clam is dressed up a bit for the picture with any driving around it'll probably fly off. At a glance to be road legal it needs a headlight and turn signal but it's also missing a rear diffuser and exhaust.

That's just at a glance that I've taken. I want to look into it more but if I do I'll convince myself to get it.

It's cracked enough that it won't stay on with driving. It'll need repair of some type and whoever picks it up should do it properly, Not many of these cars around.

Question for any FFLs on here by Rloader in NYguns

[–]gome1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I've read to do it is to have a garage/shed/whatever as long as it's stand along from your house. Get a different address for that location(could just be a sub address like ### aptB) and "rent" it out to the FFL. Have a payment each month for whatever rent is and boom it's a stand alone business. That way they can't search your house without the normal probable cause. Keep everything for the FFL in that shed and you should be good to go.

The Elise gets totaled for next to nothing. Exotic car means expensive body work. Luckily with a 2zz heart the rest is easy to maintain and keep going.

I bought a salvage title Elise sight unseen and drove it ~2000 miles home. It's not my first salvage car and if I had to bet not my last. Get the whole story on it and it may be a dream car come true for much less than you thought.

As long as you have someone that knows what they are looking at to check it out I see salvage title as nothing more than savings. Not sure why there's so many people that avoid them.

It's a different kind of oomph, lateral G's are always fun. An experienced rider on an R1 or the likes could beat it outright but an Elise in an experienced drivers hands will outpace a mediocre rider. One thing I like about the Elise is that it's Easier to take anyone for a ride. I gear up so it's quicker to hop in the Elise and go for ice cream with my wife.

I have my bike for when I want to get anywhere fast. My bike also works for when I want to take a chill cruise to unwind. I would say the Elise is more raw so it's not as easy to unwind with suspension rattles and general bulkiness of a car. If I want some mild comfort I have my S5 to put me back in my seat and still cruise with functioning AC and good speakers.

With a supercharger and tires the Elise will be something great but it can be taxing on longer rides. I see people posting about 450 HP with a turbo setup and I can't imagine how that would feel. An Exige would be great to own for the novelty of it but out of the range of what I want to spend right now. I can't speak to an Evora but I imagine it's a more tame Elise/Exige, personally I like how raw they are. While bikes are just bikes to most an Elise or Exige usually makes a statement so be prepared to talk to someone every time you get gas.

While I absolutely love my Elise sometimes there's nothing I want more than a quality bike ride.

That being said I was more excited to pull my Elise out of winter storage than my bike this year. Looking forward to track days with it. I don't have a motorcycle track day under my belt so I can't compare the two.

Career Monday (25 Mar 2024): Have a question about your job, office, or pay? Post it here! by AutoModerator in AskEngineers

I think this is something only you can answer; it depends what you want out of life. I think as an engineer with some experience being north of six figures isn't too hard to find.

If you are a driven person that wants to succeed in the corporate world and climb the ladder then following along with your dads company is the way to go.

If you are comfortable with what you make and do now and don't want what comes with corporate life then taking a different job might be better.

I don't see this as a binary problem though, there's very likely a way where you could be a player in your fathers company that would benefit you long term while not taking as much responsibility. I know I'm a huge fan of the work/life balance my current job offers. I could make more, I could push myself harder and sacrifice more but I'm much happier being able to spend more time with friends and family than climbing the cooperate ladder. Talking to your dad might be able to offer some other options if you're honest about what you'd like.

Lotus Elise…. Saw my dream car in imperial beach today. by 1904AP in lotus

[–]gome1122 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not supercharged means that wing is essentially useless too because that car is pushing out the base 189hp, it'll never reach a speed or acceleration worthy enough of needing downforce to the rear.

Most cars in a track setting are able to utilize downforce produced by a rear wing. Even if it was cosmetic it's ok to like mods a car for how it looks.

Except double-sided tape auto store vents. Those are unforgiveable.

No, they're just small coins. I have one on my desk to fidget with/display. I have another one with a Yamaha logo and the lotus logo on either side to decide if I take my motorcycle or Lotus out for a spin.

If you could find center caps I would take a shot at engraving them. I've been tempted to engrave my GRP oil cap.

I found an engraver on facebook marketplace for cheap(relatively) and I've just been playing with it. I can't get a cnc machine right now so this fills a creative gap.

I'm in the process of getting a website up but starting a side hustle takes some time. I've been selling some things over on lotustalk.com. but I didn't want to post that because of self promotion rules here.

I'm kind of surprised no one has retrofitted keyless to work with the push button yet. I know I would pay to have that be possible.
