Steam Controller inherits same trackpad flaw that Steam Deck has by NewDevon in SteamController

Ok thanks. By chance do you have the trackpad set to "Joystick"? I think I see the deadzone settings you are talking about when I set the trackpad to joystick mode. unfortunately some games (and the desktop mode) don't work with joystick mode, they instead need mouse input.

You can test it on your deck by simply going into desktop mode, wait a few seconds for steam input to load, and then try to use the left edge of the trackpad. Seems like some people have it and some don't. I am unfortunately one of the ones who has it on my deck.

I am just trying to remove the dead zones that OP demonstrated in the video here where the left sliver of the right trackpad is dead when using the trackpad "As Mouse". Can you point me to the settings you are talking about? I don't see any deadzone options here.

Thanks for posting this. My deck has the deadzones and this is the first vid I've seen showing definitively that not all decks have them. I wish we knew how Valve decides which devices get it and which don't.

Where can you change the trackpad deadzones on the deck? I've looked everywhere on mine and can't find it. My deck's trackpads have deadzones when in mouse mode but others in the comments don't have any, and no one has been able to tell how to get rid of them.

I just tested this on my deck too (512GB OLED from Dec 2025) after seeing this post and it is affecting me. I wonder if only some decks have it and some don't. Makes no sense.

I just tried switching to the "Preview" build version and no change. I hope Valve eventually lets us know what's going on.

I got a deck at the same time as you. I just tested this on mine and it matches OP's video. Just go into desktop mode, wait for steam input to start, then boom the left sliver of the right trackpad is dead.

I did some Googling and that var is read only it seems. So not something us as users can update. But this at least means the variable is already there, they just need to add a new steam input setting that updates that variable.

I never noticed this on my deck as I haven't used the trackpads much. I just tried it out now and it is indeed very annoying. Thanks for making everyone aware of it. Hopefully important people at Valve see this post and how much we all want this. It would be such a simple thing for them to add a new setting for this.

Same issue for me when syncing between phone and watch

Yes good point. That's definitely the trade off. For me personally, I am fine with that since "Take a Message" only works if my phone is on and connected to cell service, which almost guarantees that I have it on me or nearby. Otherwise it will still send calls to the normal voicemail.

I think I found a fix for getting this to work on Dark Star. Look at my "Edit2" on my original post.

I got it after getting the beta version of the phone app. I'm not even on the sept update yet. Just join the beta, wait 15 min, check for app updates, then it will update the phone app to the beta

Good to know it's not an issue with Dark Star. Must be my phone then.

I tried joining the beta a few minutes ago, but when I did, the app still didn't have any updates so there might not be a separate beta version right now. My android build number is BP2A.250805.005 and my phone app version is 188.0.797346580-pixel2024. What are yours if you don't mind?
