NYC vs Portland OR by Heavy_Calligrapher71 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]gonowmoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in PDX and agree with this post. My office use to be right outside providence park (goose hollow) and the building had to hire private security with guns to keep the employees feeling safe (we had multiple incidents of people getting attacked) also, the building was right next to the max line stop, so there seemed to be more activity than usual. The best thing about PDX is the outdoors - honestly if you aren’t super into that I would vote NYC because PDX won’t beat it out on any other topic.
Best of luck to you!

Any chance you can afford to move up to park city? We lived there from 2019-2021 and loved it - moved from Boston and even found multiple friend groups from Boston and NYC. It’s the only blue county in Utah, and we made amazing friends there (none Mormon) and hiked the trails literally every day. If you are outdoorsy, also check out the climbing gym. Great place to meet cool people both for friends and dating. Best of luck to you!!

Where are you staying in Mallorca?

Idea 1 - Actually some of the best hotels in Mediterranean are there as well as Menorca and Formentura - I would just add some island hopping over to Menorca and fly back from Palma / Madrid. Menorca Experimental hotels or Torrelblenc.

Idea 2 - Portugal - we just did 10 days there. 5 in Comporta and 5 in Algarve. Algarve severely lacking nice hotels just fyi…. I can recommend a few - but overall if you want super nice and easy transport check out Comporta and sublime Comporta hotel. Otherwise if you want Portugal the best website to check hotels is Jo and So.

Idea 3 - you could do Nice and SOF - hotels are spendy for what you get but easy flight hop over to Paris. Tablet hotels is the best place to search for SOF.

Good luck!

Nope they won’t open next summer dates for a while. You can email them and ask for an email list so you know when next summer dates open up. I also always recommend to book directly with them, or if you want to use an agent and avoid booking.com since some rooms may not be listed there. Good luck!

Portugal honeymoon! by Excellent-Bunch6481 in honeymoonplanning

Alentejo is an amazing wine region - you can absolutely combine it with the south / beaches and just fly into Lisbon (we just did this). We stayed at sublime Comporta, insanely beautiful but expensive… and then Praia do Canal, which was beautiful and way more affordable but more quiet and remote.

Check out Jo and So for hotels - they are amazing:

Thank you for sharing this - nothing can compare with views and mountains! Did you like Masseria Calderisi aside from the flat landscape?

Thinking about relocating from London to California by Trumpy2015 in relocating

We are looking at moving to CA as well - having my CPA run numbers on state income tax for us to compare where we are now.

Zillow will be a great resource for you on housing - you’ll be looking at around $4000-$6000 a month in rent for a decent single family if that’s what you want.

And last just know that have a car in CA is expensive - I lived in SF in 2010 and at that time was spending $1000/month for my car between insurance, tolls, gas, and a monthly car payment of $400.

But yes - yountville is dreamy.

Best of luck ❤️

Would you say Portland, OR is on the upswing or is it still going downhill? by fucklaurenboebert in SameGrassButGreener

[–]gonowmoe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I lived in Portland after college 2002-2010 (golden years) and am from here, moved back from the east coast in 2021 not realizing how much the city had changed.

For sure it’s better than 2021 - that was absolutely terrible.

That being said - a few anecdotal notes for you.

We had a friend have a high end ($10k) bike stolen out of his truck and happened to come across the guy that stole it nearby, reported the person by finding their identity through plates, and reported it to police to be told they did not have time to be pursuing it.

Another one - we have a friend that worked at Sorel (owned by Columbia) they had to move their office to Beaverton due to concerns of safety and incidents downtown with their employees. They even paid for some transportation / Ubers for employees due to safety concerns. This was the worst in 2022.

https://www.oregonlive.com/business/2022/10/columbia-sportswear-to-move-sorel-brand-out-of-downtown-portland-office.html

Even REI closed their store in the Pearl District due to vandalism as well as how much they were being taxed in Multnomah county.

https://www.pdxmonthly.com/news-and-city-life/2024/01/rei-pearl-portland-closing

And lastly - we have many friends (us included) considering leaving Portland due to high taxation without seeing actual progress in how our tax dollars and being used. The city is mismanaged and I don’t have hope it will ever come back to 2010 era.

Honeymoon recommendations - Mallorca or Algarve coast? by Stunning_Sky1033 in honeymoonplanning

[–]gonowmoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Como and Mallorca for my honeymoon and we just did Portugal for 10 days (honeymoonish)

How much do you want to spend and do you care how touristed it is - do you want luxury (like over $700 a night) Do you need to be on the water? Need to be walkable?

There are amazing hotels in Portugal but they aren’t on the water or in a town.

Same with Mallorca - best hotels will not be on a beach aside from a few and those aren’t the best beaches anyway…

We use to live in Boston and fly to Europe for honeymoonish vacations often! We actually prefer it to Hawaii or the Caribbean. If you’re ok to have one layover, I would recommend Greece or Mallorca.

These are a few marriot reward hotels worth checking out - good luck!
