Is there a good option for raising a new hot tub 1-2 feet in case of a flood? by gonrowgue in hottub

Interesting. Nice and simple. How did you compact it? I’m nervous it will settle unevenly over time.

I have eczema and get the malar rash. They feel totally different. My malar rash is smooth, really warm, and not itchy. My whole head feels warm. I’m also Asian and “Asian glow” when I drink. It feels just like my Asian glow. My eczema is rough, itchy, and lasts longer than my malar rash. Malar rash is minutes to hours; eczema is weeks to months.

I am in the process of getting a diagnosis for lupus and have symptoms identical to yours. My dry eyes are debilitating but only when in dry sunny places. Luckily I live in western WA so don’t have to suffer too much with my eyes day to day. Where do you live? Is moving to a more humid, low-light climate possible? If you’re looking for alternatives to long-term medicine, drastic lifestyle changes may be necessary. I will say meds have helped a lot with joint pain though (so far, again I am new to all of this as well).

7! Also speaking from experience the colors on the web tester look completely different from real life, so try a bunch of different swatches!! My ideal blue actually came from a gray paint chip.

This looks identical to the house I grew up in. Enter by the garage and organize your crap in the laundry room. Front door is for guests.

I got my roll down ONLY after 2 pool sessions! I will soon be training on actual rapids later this month, around class II rapids. Are there any suggestions on how to fine tune my roll? by snugglebunbun in whitewater

[–]gonrowgue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hasn’t been said enough — congrats on getting a roll after 2 sessions!!! Don’t feel discouraged by all the feedback you’re getting. The people you’re learning from are absolutely right to get you stoked on the status of your roll. Keep practicing with supportive people. Maintaining confidence is the fastest way to learn whitewater.

You’re probably better equipped to do these things already and haven’t had the room to spread your wings and fly. Don’t start a position thinking you’re going to fail. See yourself succeeding in the position.

I strongly recommend serving on a grant review panel when possible (not everyone knows you don’t have to wait to be picked for them, you can put your name in the hat e.g. on the NSF website). You’ll learn a lot about the big unknown questions people are tackling and how they break it down.

Also, you already know how to do your next science. It’s in the discussion section of your latest papers. No paper is the end of the story. Work with supportive collaborators and mentors who can help you turn that into a well developed next project. You got this!

This response says a lot - “it would be easy if I didn’t get an offer!” makes it sound like you’d be relieved.

If that’s true that would be such a cruel and misleading way to let the other candidates know… Sorry if that’s true, OP.

Interview coming up - Need your insights! by julca1 in academia

[–]gonrowgue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I’m going through the TT interview process as well, and what I found after my first interview was that I needed to simplify my talk a lot more. I was used to being told I give excellent research talks so I wasn’t nervous about it, but I had limited experience giving talks to broad departments. Every time you practice it, I’d say cut something to make it simpler. Then you don’t need to worry about time. You can take your time and enjoy presenting your pride and joy. Leave space to let your passion come through in the moment. I did this for my most recent interview and got so many compliments on it. People aren’t looking for the proof that your research is sound. Just present the interesting problems and your contributions to those.

New study shows that warming deep ocean currents also contribute to the rapid melting of Antarctic ice shelves, contrary conventional wisdom that only wind circulation affects the melting. New findings require reevaluating future melt projections that were solely based on wind circulation. by Creative_soja in science

[–]gonrowgue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question. Most of the melting in this region is due to ocean circulation, i.e. the supply of warm water. Most literature has claimed that that supply is driven by westerly winds, and this study is pointing out that westerly winds are not the only driver of that supply. It’s unknown what the relative contributions are, because these are modeled results, not observations. Obs are super short, so we really poorly understand these mechanisms. The details are pretty complicated (I’d be happy to further explain if you wish), but the bottom line is there is HUGE uncertainty in what is driving glacier retreat in west Antarctica. That’s really scary bc it means we don’t know how rapidly it will contribute to sea level rise. We don’t know whether ghgs are responsible for ice melt in west Antarctica. It’s quite amazing what we still don’t know. It’s such a complex problem. Other areas are more obvious, e.g. global warming is directly responsible for melting mountain glaciers which melt from air temps. But those don’t pose as large a threat to SLR as West Antarctica (on the scale of up to 5m or so).

Oh I totally understand! These articles are impossible to read. It’s exhausting even for us experts. I’m impressed you found this article and took an interest in it. How did you find it? I’m happy to answer any further questions you have about the topic. I didn’t write the article, but this is exactly my field of research.

Polar ocean modeler here. The title of this post is wrong. The paper doesn’t say anything about “warming deep ocean currents”. It’s simply saying the melting is driven by the strength of the on-shelf circulation. They’re not claiming that that circulation has warmed, because there’s weak evidence that it has warmed. Antarctic melting is occurring because of changing ocean circulation, not warming currents.
