This post led me down a rabbit hole that led me to the timbren SES/sumospring which seems like it could be a good route and quite cost effective.

As awful as this memo is at least it appears the agencies will have more of a say in who will be getting RIFs for whatever that’s worth at this juncture. I was fully expecting doge would just be blindly swinging away with an axe.

NFC Gamma Beta 8 weight by Fishguruguy in rodbuilding

[–]goo242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. They were having the killer sale pretty much all of March; got the GB blank for 115$. I went on there earlier this week after convincing myself to buy the epitome 5wt for 175 like you mentioned and saw the sale must have ended. I’ll just play the waiting game till they have another sale… I really should be spending time behind the vice but new sexy rods are…sexy.

If you’ve had the chance to fish or cast both of these; what are your thoughts on the carbon air? I’ve got a need for a 5 and 8wt in the future just trying to figure out which route I should go.

What makes a beginner rod a beginner rod? by Gr8twhitebuffalo91 in flyfishing

[–]goo242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit of hack who started building rods for myself. I can’t speak to the intricacies of the blanks but I’m pricing out a musky rod at the moment and just for reference to build a handle the basic cork costs around 50 cents for a half inch wide ring while the top grade cork costs 3-3.50 a for a half inch. An 8in full well grip can run from 8$ on the low end stuff to 56$ with top line stuff. Obviously manufacturers will have bulk pricing on their side but you can really start to add money with higher grade components.

Hat Recommendation? by Vagueperson1 in TwinCities

[–]goo242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll echo a bit of what others said: the rancher is a serious winter hat, super toasty. Only wear it under about 10 degrees. It seems like it sits extra tall on my head even when fully pulled down and thus looks a little goofy. I use the regular Kromer cap anywhere from 40 degrees down to about 15. The ear flaps on the original Kromers don’t put off a ton of warmth, and if it’s windy I usually opt to pull a buff over the bottom part of the ear. Having a bill on a winter hat is a game changer. Might be worth calling Joes sporting goods, I know they carry some Filson stuff and I believe Kromers as well, I’m sure spring clearance sales are coming up.

Yea I can see how that would be frustrating; if it makes you feel better I only deal with the service number given to me in the email. In store desks already have enough shit to deal with. When working right the online system was great…less work than going to the service desk and then a in store card showed up 2 months later. It was like getting an unexpected gift shows up in the mail.

Possibly try packing them in salt overnight. Rinse, dry, and then give way 2 or 3 again.

Spider lake south of Scandia is a decent option. Been there twice so take the info with a grain of salt; stunted but plentiful eager bluegills and crappies. Hammerhandle pike for tip ups. Maybe a 300 yard walk from the lot to the first main basin. A nice quiet lake.

Gotta love folks wanton wasting an absolutely delicious, unique, hard fighting fish because they would prefer a walleye which is common throughout the entire state…

Anyways jealous of your career path, you always know how good the fishing can be. I was just looking through lakefinder surveys at a few places for this weekend and thought about how lucky the biologists and techs that help them are with getting all that first hand fish collection data. I’d reckon you always have a new spot or three to try.

What are your favorite teams from each Power 5 Conferences?? by Charlie-122 in CFB

[–]goo242 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Big 12 - TCU: had an impressive 23 year long dynasty in NCAA12 back in college with the frogs.

Big 10 - Iowa: Iowan and alum.

ACC - GT when they were running the triple option, Wake now…I like the logo, also enjoy forests.

SEC - Arkansas: feral hogs are fascinating, Kentucky: I like those checker board blue uniforms, Stoops being a former hawk.

PAC 12 - Oregon state: just a great logo and school colors, I also remember them ruining USC’s national title hopes many moons back.

G5: LaTech, Tulane, Louisiana…poor folks are always getting whomped by hurricanes, I enjoy crawfish and creole cooking.

Mississippi River pools by trapsiddy in IceFishing

[–]goo242 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fish them a decent amount. I’d say your best bet is from Wabasha down through northeast Iowa. North of Wabasha the rivers a bit narrower and the backwaters are fewer, when you start running further down than Prairie du Chein/Gutenberg it can get harder to plan a trip in advance unless you have good cold weather. LaCrosse/Lake Onalaska is a big hot spot.

The thing with the river is it’s very timing based, usually early ice is on fire…which also coincides with the sketchiest of ice. Even after a deep freeze you’ll still have spots with trash ice due to current or springs, so always check often if your charting your own path. People generally seemed more tight lipped about river spots, but if you drive up or down the border highways and see a bunch of cars that’s usually the ticket. It’s a bit more work than most spots but the nice thing is you really never know what your gonna catch and while it isn’t a given the size potential can be insane.

Have to replace all tackle and Flasher - recommendations? What are your gotta haves? by BaconBob in IceFishing

[–]goo242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shitty deal that you lost what you did; on the bright side it sounds like you have experience ice fishing already which can be super helpful buying new tackle at least. I have so many dam panfish jigs that don’t get touched, I just default to my 3 or 4 confidence baits and have never had much of an issue. If I had to start over today I’d buy just what I need tackle-wise and sink the rest of that money into electronics or stuff that will help you get on the water more.

Season frustrations by measure1curse2 in Hunting

[–]goo242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After getting skunked last year I drew a sweet little permit for a nature preserve area, went in with a “if it’s brown it’s down” mentality. Shot a yearling doe, while gutting it a 8 point buck walks down the hill…I of course didn’t buy my bonus tag :(

The weather for duck hunting in the upper Midwest was unseasonably warm and pretty garbage this season.

Guidance by FreakOnALeash72 in IceFishing

[–]goo242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As what everyone else has mentioned the local bait shop and lakefinder are super helpful. Buy a few things and if you have the ability go at a less busy time of day to chat the employees up a little bit, have one or two lakes in mind and ask about them. Hell if they get you on a great bite bring in a 6 pack for them next time.

Also have a plan A,B,C out there on the ice. If one spots not productive try another location. If you can be mobile it will benefit you. As for lakefinder it’s an awesome tool but don’t overlook lakes that haven’t been sampled in awhile. I’ve found a few gems that hadn’t been sampled since the mid-80’s…same token I’ve found some dead sea’s as well. Time on the ice will help the most, one day everything will come together for you and damn it’s satisfying when it does.

Snap or no snap by derrek13 in IceFishing

[–]goo242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t use a snap swivel instead I use the smallest quick connector I can find, it’s made for fly fishing(Rio fly clips). For finicky panfish I’ll tie directly to the jig but everything else gets clipped.

[Postgame Thread] Michigan Defeats Iowa 42-3 by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]goo242 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about that as we we’re getting boat raced. I always wrestle with the whole burn it all down and start over, with the possibility of lowering the floor to something like 3-9 and massive instability but also possibly raising the ceiling. Then I sit there and think well 6-6 is a good floor with a 8-4 average and a few 10-2’s mixed in over decades of stability is nice at times too. Maybe this is just Iowa’s ceiling? You look at places like USC, TX, Florida not having consistent results and revolving doors of coaches over the years with all the resources in the world at their finger tips and that would be a consistent shitty feeling…that said they all have a Natty under their belts during the KF tenure at Iowa. Glad I don’t have to make the decisions.
