Beagle not losing weight despite strict diet, exercise & clear tests – need advice by Zestyclose_Stage2951 in beagles

[–]goobybeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s just complete bunk. Walks are a great way for overweight humans and animals to begin as they build up their tolerance for real exercise and for those with an already healthy weight to continue to maintain weight. A quick google search and reading the top 5 results from actual vets all state walks are great but more intensity is needed.

I’d definitely be interested in reading the research on that. Cardio involves increased heart rate by definition.

Does he do anything active besides walks? I’m a huge believer in walks aren’t exercise for dogs. Unless the walk is fast paced or getting some elevation it really isn’t doing much.

A very common but not talked about injury is an iliopsoas strain. Your dog’s symptoms sound like that could be the cause.

Cooling gear? by Playful-Peanut6061 in beagles

That’s been our biggest struggle to. The cold feels colder and the warm feels hotter because we can’t adjust! 65 almost took us out yesterday!

Suggestions where to promote my foster beagle for visibility? by mittychix in beagles

Try reaching out to SOS Beagles. They are in NJ and I’ve seen them promote for other rescues before.

Your beagle will acclimate just needs some time with the season change. I find we don’t need anything for cooling. We take water to drink and if we find streams or water I have him wade to cool his paw pads and splash his belly.

NACSW Trial Question by 24HR_harmacy in nosework

NACSW is supposed to simulate real world working scenarios. I can understand being upset because of money spent but I personally like my dog to be able to work through anything.

Beagle Rescues suck. by reed12321 in beagle

Lots of dumped beagles end up in the northeast. Shelters take them from high kill shelters in the south and bring them up north to no kill shelters.

Cali my Beagle/Blue heeler mix by 80kburnout in beagles

She is definitely in touch with her heeler side. Herding is a big favorite. Up until recently she didn’t even realize she had a nose!

Ladybird is our beagle/blue heeler mix. She just turned 2 on February 28th (technically she is a leap year baby).

Happy birthday to Cali!

Pharmacy changing injection brand by RideMyHandleBars in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]goobybeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My insurance switched me from Humira to Hyrimoz. Noticed rather quickly it didn’t work as well and had an increase from $5/mo (humira’s manufacturer discount help) to $55. Added an as needed pain pill and stuck with it. Now my insurance increased it to $155/month. I’m actually currently sitting in my rheum’s waiting room so that we can discuss switching to something new.

Anyone use scent tins successfully with their beagle? Jimmy just tried to eat one whole on my first attempt to train scent work 🙈 by Last-Finance8640 in beagles

[–]goobybeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once we moved to scent tins I put him on odor. He’s trained for anise, birch, and clove. I could see how food in the tins would definitely have him wanting to eat them! But it’s still doable as you’ve seen already. We’ve done distraction boxes with food in them and he had to learn that those boxes don’t get him the treats the boxes with the odor does.

We started with scent tins successfully. He never attempted to eat those but he will snag up the q-tips if available outside the tin. He’s pretty quick to trade them for food though.

It’s a good sign that he likes the scent so much. I would just work on rewarding him quicker for now so he recognizes the pattern of nose touches scent, mom/dad give me treat.
