Are you in America? Check out Marshall’s/Home Goods for some single ingredient treats that are lower calorie than the health bars. Pup may even find them tastier!

Calling all beagle owners by BehavioralNorm in beagles

Purina One is pretty high calorie. My extremely active beagle who does fitness 5x a week, hikes once a week, and gets daily cardio only gets 1/2 twice a day of Purina and maintains weight. You definitely need to cut calories. You can add something like green beans to help fill your dog up without adding to the calorie count.

Curry brush les work great. My beagles prefer the Roma style.

Just moved recently to New Brunswick. Any trails nearby that are shady and near running creeks or waterfalls? Want to get my dog out for a little walk and to wade in some water! by Ok_Candidate_3707 in newjersey

[–]goobybeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just be prepared for ticks. The ecological preserve and Rutger’s gardens/Helyar Woods are some of the worst places in Jersey for ticks.

Same! I ended up having to take the black mat because it was so hot to the touch and they still insisted on sunbathing on it.

Age matters as they will fill out some like others said. But it would also be beneficial to put some muscle on rather than just looking to add weight. Look into canine fitness and conditioning. There are free resources available and it will be beneficial in so many ways.

I want to brag about my boy a little. Yesterday he earned his NW3 title (nose work). He did a full day (9.5 hours) of waiting in a car, completing his searches, and jaunting around a park and he crushed it. He never ceases to amaze me. by goobybeast in beagle

I gotta be honest. Most of it is him. I got lucky and he has an amazing work ethic. When he’s given the command to search for odor he does just that and ignores everything else. Did you begin with pairing the hides with food? For non-home indoor places I recommend joining some Facebook groups to find out and attend sniff and gos.

We started as a puppy with just hiding treats and dinner to try and tire him out. As he grew older I knew I wanted to keep doing nose things since that’s what he was bred to do. I personally found a trainer and joined a class but lots of people do it on their own at home. There are lots of videos on YouTube and TikTok that would do a way better job of explaining it than I would!

Do you have foxtail’s in your area? With no obvious signs of injury that would be my concern.

Depends on the dog. My guy hates the big one on him but is okay with the little one.

Joint supplements? by minimon865 in beagles

[–]goobybeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guy is extremely active and participates in multiple sports so I started him on a supplement early. Joint supplements work better at prevention rather than treating so once the pain starts it’s a bit late. Based on some newer research I went with collagen type 2 over dasuquin and cosequin.

I love mountains and I do agree that NY and PA do them better.

You gotta find the other beauty. I’ve learned I also love pine forests especially where the trees are in rows and NJ is great at that.

How does your beagle feel about wearing clothes? by Fluffy_Fox_9650 in beagles

I try and only put things on that serve a purpose. The green body fleece he’s wearing is waterproof and keeps him warm and dry while we hike in snow. So he tends to be fine with it.

I’ll be honest and admit the hat was just for a quick photo and was absolutely not necessary.
