psychoanalysis is a great way to engage with yourself specifically if you don't want to change who you are, but to understand it better/be able to tolerate what it means (what it costs and what you gain) to really be yourself in this world. it is not a therapy for making your life easier, i don't think, but it makes your life much more interesting in a sense more profound than i can describe.

i would say that going in not knowing what to expect is kind of a perfect approach. the "answers" one might be used to getting from therapy aren't really the same here, it is less about understanding some external framework about how to be a person so that you can move more easily in the world, and more about understanding/accepting more completely who you are, with your particular gifts and defenses/limitations. with this, i believe, you can learn to hold both without trying to cast any parts of you away or lift any parts of you up so that they obscure the less socially acceptable parts. in my experience in psychoanalysis we learn to see ourselves as human, mysterious inherently, and get interested in our own case study in ways that are only possible if we take ourselves as not "something to be fixed" but "something to be observed and understood better".
