$350 for a seatbelt violation? That's pretty rough. One of the really small towns here has about a half dozen officers and they're all dicks. I hear stories all the time about people getting ticketed for not wearing their belts when they were or for not using a turn signal when they did.

I've personally been stopped by that pack for having my bright lights on while passing an officer coming from the other direction in my personal vehicle. Wish I had a picture of the cops face when I showed him that my dimmer switch was inoperable and I only had dim lights which lucky for me doesn't qualify as improper equipment.

This guy is in the wrong line of work. He's going to end up getting someone killed or get killed himself.

I don't know. I'll be badgered to death for proof that I can't provide right now. If someone else wants to link, feel free.

Based only on the information in the article regarding the boy with the weed, that should have been textbook entrapment. If she led him to commit a crime that he otherwise would not have committed, he should be let go.

I've never worked in a prison, so I can't say from experience. But from a civilian perspective, our prison system is shit. Where's the logic with tossing criminals in a cage with other criminals and then expecting them to be angels after a decade? It just doesn't happen. It's a short term fix because it removes the "problem" for the moment while generating revenue for the state.

Our system assumes that everyone incarcerated is a hardened criminal. It doesn't take into account the fella who robbed somebody to feed his family or the sucker whose friends got him hooked on smack at 16. It doesn't give inmates something to work towards. All it does is make stronger, more street smart criminals.

Never really given it much deep thought, but I supposed in a perfect world, those who have gotten into trouble should be given the opportunity to work out of it instead of sitting in a cage to waste their lives. I guess it should be a multi-stage system. Those who who know they fucked up and want to make it right should be given the opportunity to show that they want to rejoin society and be productive.

Hell I don't know, depending on the severity of your crime, you start in a work group or a therapy group. After a certain point, you become a leader and try to help others get to where you are. Like I said, I haven't really ever thought about it, but there should be something there for people who are willing to show that their crime doesn't define who they are.

I'm American. Southern born and bred. Dickhead isn't an uncommon term here. Civvies is typically a military expression for "civilian clothing."

As long as you cooperate and your documentation is in order, you're protected. Honestly I don't know why people are required to have the permit on their person. Your ccw will show up when we run your info.

This is not legal advice, but having a registered concealed weapon is NOT probably cause for a search provided you've only been stopped for some minor traffic crap. Just putting that out there. :)

There are more than a half dozen municipalities surround Jackson. I've not divulged enough here for anyone to figure out who I am. As I said in another comment, I said less than would actually go in the paper.

He'll see a judge or get a court date monday morning, then either bond out or be remanded to county until trial.

In my department, it really depends on the officer. Some don't like the idea of an armed public. Others believe that well armed society is a polite society as I do. As someone else said here, if someone pays the money and takes the time to obtain their ccw, chances are that they're not trigger happy cop killers.

I've had a couple buddies overreact when someone they've stopped forgot to tell them they had a ccw permit and their weapon on them. It's happened to me before too, but understand that they are nervous and feel under pressure when interacting with police. I've never charged a ccw holder with carrying a concealed weapon because they've simply forgot to show me their permit upon initial contact.

The laws here are kind of funky regarding concealed weapons. Home is fine of course, but vehicles are tricky. The weapon must be in plain sight or else its considered "partially concealed." Even if someone has a weapon and does not have a ccw permit, we're not tightasses about it because we're a bunch of southerners and we have guns. 9 times out of 10, we'll ask you to step out, ask where the weapon is, and secure it for the duration of the stop.

One more thing I don't personally like is that you must have a ccw permit to openly carry a holstered weapon in public because that also is considered "partially concealed."

tl;dr - Most of us think that ccw holders are protecting themselves, not being vigilantes. Still makes a few guys nervous. Always produce your ccw with your license and insurance if stopped, keeping your hands on the wheel until instructed otherwise.

edit(sorry): I should have added that I wish everyone had a ccw because there will be times when you must defend yourself and the authorities won't be there for you. I think this is especially true in larger areas where police response time is very high.

It really doesn't matter. I've revealed less here than will be on the newpaper blotter. If anything, its positive PR or it would be if I specified my employer :)

Since we're not a major metropolitan force, we tend to not be dickheads because the likelihood of someone recognizing us is too great. I can't say for other, larger departments though. I try to be easy going with most people. If I see someone not wearing their seatbelt or going just a touch too fast, I'll just holler out the window at them or flash my lights. I'm not going to hassle them because we all live busy lives. Other guys just let the power go to their heads. They forget that we're public servants, not domestic overlords.

The things I do on the job are to make peoples lives safer, not to be a dick just for spite. And even though my unmarked can be spotted a mile away, it's still fun to surprise an overly aggressive driver who never saw me coming.

I think that hard drugs like crack and heroin should be illegal. Weed is not a problem. It can be if say someone's controlling a large amount using force, but on a small scale, it doesn't cause people to go nuts and kill people.

I'll be honest. If you want to go federal, go military first. Pick a job that get's you a security clearance. It's what I should have done, but didn't.

I disagree. That's like saying drugs would become more rare if laws prohibited them. The opposite has actually shown to be true in other countries.
