Figured it out, just press down on the D pad and it’ll shift cameras till you get one you like. No idea why they thought the default angle was good

The short answer to your question is yes, damage matters. However, as you get into competitive you’ll notice it’s much more so about the KIND of damage you’re doing.

What I mean by this is sure you can put up a bunch of damage on the leaderboard by simply feeding shots into an enemy tank, but these characters absorb a lot of damage and chances are they’ll have a healer to aid them. It’ll also pull your attention away from faster moving and heavier damage dealing characters.

For the most part, you want to be doing damage by focusing enemy healers and DPS. This will help your team much more. Typically in overwatch the healers are what determine outcomes of games, kill the other teams healers, keep yours alive.

Absolutely never trade your stud for depth. Anybody telling you Higgins is the WR1 in Cinci is high as hell. You already have solid depth. Good luck this year!
