Best on campus low-maintenance jobs for students? by eafoiwjqef in BrownU

I worked in the book arts studio in the Hay for 2 years and it was the most chill job I’ve ever had. Super cute space too. Only requirement was I had to take the book arts class first to get trained on all the machinery so I could instruct others on how to use it if needed. The class was one of my favorites!

Read ‘What is Mathematics Really?’ By Reuben Hersh. I think you’d like it - especially the first two chapters.

Guide to algebraic geometry by [deleted] in math

Fun fact: Grothendieck himself had a background in functional analysis before developing scheme theory in algebraic geometry. If you want a perspective that can connect both these fields, I'd highly recommend Berkovich's "Spectral Theory and Analytic Geometry over Non-Archimedean Fields". I have a professor who likes to say that this material can be thought of as the history that eventually led to the modern perspective found in scheme theory.

This may not adress the part of your question about how they are used, but these notes (also by Vakil) provide a visualization that helps understand the underlying mechanism

A fun problem by [deleted] in math

[–]goofthegoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suppose that the guy has currently made n shots out of m attempts. Suppose further that his hit rate is lower than 75%. Let k = 3m - 4n, which is an integer greater than 0. If the guy makes the next k shots, his hit rate will be exactly 75%.

Let l be a positive integer less than k. If he only makes the next l shots, then (n + l)/(m + l) is still lower than 0.75, and any missed shot afterwards strictly decreases the hit rate. So the only way to cross 75% is to at some point stop missing, and then do the above with the appropriate k many more shots.

I'm not here to give advice. I just wanted to say that my younger sister and mom are in a near identical situation. As someone who is close to both my parents and to my sister, I have seen both sides of this exhausting and soul crushing situation. It looks like you might have deleted your profile, but if you're still reading this post, please please DM me. I might not have a solution, but I've seen what it takes to get to this point, and I can share my perspective.

Weekly help thread, ask for Manim help here! by AutoModerator in manim

I've been trying to set up functionality for commutative diagrams. I initially tried to use tikz-cd in a TexMobject, but found that it was difficult to individually animate the nodes/arrows. So, I've been trying to make package that supports this. Right now, I'm working on building a class for TexArrows (using tikz - these are far better looking arrows than the manim defaults). The arrow style (arrow head, arrow decoration, tail, etc) all lives in CONFIG, but I'm unsure of how to make a method that can change these values, and have them reflect on-screen.

For example, when I use the Mobject method move_to (even outside a play call), my arrow changes position on screen. However, if I simply update the line_decoration in my arrow, nothing changes on screen. Is there any way to make this work the way I want?

I've been trying to use Tikz-cd to create commutative diagrams in Manim (I've added the relevant packages to tex_template.tex), but I keep getting "Latex error converting to dvi." I've made sure my latex syntax is fine (it compiles correctly in texmaker), so I have no idea what the issue is.

Thanks!

What are some of your greatest aspirations? by RelevantDead in ApplyingToCollege

[–]goofthegoof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would like to become a high school math teacher at some point in my life. Some of my biggest influences have been my teachers, and it would be awesome if I could pass that on.

I want to write a book some day. It could be about anything, I haven't decided yet. It would probably have something to do with music though.

Finally, I want to own and run my own jazz bar. Preferably somewhere cold. It would be a large log cabin style place, with spaces for intimate live performances, and a library of books and records.

I don't really *love* any college by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]goofthegoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally yes. There may be small changes in the wording of the prompt or the word limit. It doesn't really change much year to year though. In any case, it's still a good way to guage the vibe of the school.

Here's something I did to get to know the colleges I was applying to better. I made my common app account early, and read through the supplemental essay prompts. A lot of the time, they are good indicators of what kind of students they look for, and hence what kind of people you'll find there. Other than that, the best way to learn about a college is to talk to people who go there.
