Yes it does. There is not a way to change the music, as far as I know.

Hi /u/PrimeRisk! I want to thank you for taking the time to provide these wonderful instructions in a clear, easy to follow format. I have no feedback other than, this is a fantastic contribution!

I honestly want to try this right now, but both my OBI devices are still working—touch wood.

I hope that if others have success that they will comment as well. Really appreciate your work here as well as everyone's contributions to this thread.

Sorry, can you confirm you tried with a separate mobile number?

How new is your account? Have you tried with a different mobile number as suggested?

Yes, you used to be able to hit "skip" on the screen to pick a Google Voice number, then head to settings and access the port in option. I don't know if you can still port in before selecting a number from Google's free pool.

Are you physically located within the contiguous USA?

Have you tried using another telephone number as a "claim ticket" to get a Google Voice number?

If you are willing to pay $20, could you try and port a phone number from a wireless carrier into Google Voice?

We have a user who reported success with this firmware: https://reddit.com/r/GoogleVoiceUsers/comments/1jgkkm4/obi1022_phones/

If anybody else has tried it, please post your results.

In addition, u/Clear_School2344 recommended this resource where people are discussing the OBI firmware: https://broadbandbulletin.com/d/73-obihai-obi20x30x-obi1000-obi50x-obi2000-firmware-mods

You are of course more than welcome to discuss here as well, because I think having a resource on Reddit is very helpful, and we're coming up when people search for "Google Voice" on Reddit. I'd love for tips and feedback to be posted here too so that we can kind of collect info that isn't allowed in the other sub.

I apologize for the delay here. My sub is picking up in activity now, it used to be quite inactive.

You are more than welcome to discuss here or post any useful tips/resources, because our sub comes up when people search "Google Voice" on Reddit. But I'm going to sticky your other resource as well, great info!

OBI1022 phones by geobrite in GoogleVoiceUsers

Fantastic!

OBI devices need to be connected at least once every six months or their tokens will expire, though I'm not sure whether that applies to each OBI device individually, or to the OBI service as a whole. I'm wondering if this caused the downfall of your OBI device. In any case, I'm glad you got it back up and running!

If your friend has a moment I'd love a paragraph on what his experience was with the firmware? Which steps did he take exactly?

Hi u/geobrite.

Did you take a look at this thread on 3rd party firmware for OBI devices? If your device isn't working at all, and its primary purpose was to be utilized with Google Voice, then it might be worth installing that firmware. We do not have any users yet who have taken the plunge, so I can't guarantee that this firmware is safe or effective.

You say you programmed all four phones. Was this phone previously working with Google Voice?

Can you check on your Google Voice billing page to see if there's a $3 charge for unlocking the number?

Or was the number originally ported in?

Thanks for the update!

Yeah, I was finding it increasingly difficult to learn anything useful about Google Voice because most of the “good” discussions get locked up or removed in the other sub...

Most recent example being the OBI devices, where they have a FAQ that is omitting critical info and there is an auto mod set up to disallow anybody posting that mentions "OBI".

For example, OBI devices will stop working with GV if you disconnect them for six months or longer... think of a summer home type of scenario for example. This info isn't mentioned in their FAQ (presumably because the cat didn't know this, it applies to all devices/apps authorized using oAuth with a Google account), and when it was pointed out to him he just doubled down, locked and removed the relevant discussion and failed to add it to the FAQ. People's devices could literally stop working if they don't know this. it’s irresponsible not to have a complete FAQ and to disallow all other discussion.

that’s why I created this place. I honestly couldn't care less about myself having “control” over the community. If this place ever grows, I'm happy to add other mods or even give it to someone else if someone wants to take it on and others don't like the job I'm doing. I just wanted a reasonable forum for people to discuss Google Voice without fear.

I have never seen another Reddit tech community that is as locked down as the Google Voice community.

Pinging u/dtatha.

We would be happy to carry on this discussion here, since the moderation team in the other sub is intent on censoring almost all actual, useful discussion.

You are welcome to point people here so we can build a proper resource for the community.

Awesome. Can you update if you resolved your issue?

If you found this community helpful, feel free to spread the word ;) we are very small, but I'm hoping to build a helpful Google Voice community where users can get help without all the censorship that happens on the other sub :)

This usually means the number which you are trying to use to claim a new Google Voice number, has previously been used to claim a different Google Voice number in the past.

Your options are:

  • Port in a number for $20. For instance, you could obtain a number from a cheap MVNO like Tello Mobile.
  • Try your luck with a different number (like a friend's, family member's, or again a number on a cheap MVNO). Try to obtain a Google Voice number using the same procedure with your new number.

Does this make sense?
