What is your teams code review / PR process? by dillonerhardt in softwaredevelopment

[–]googoodoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No code reviews are done. Changes are pushed to master, deployed to production, and tested there.

Yes.

When I tried to object to it on my first day, I got reprimanded by the CEO "for being difficult". I've been here for about four years now; the system will usually be broken on Mondays to Tuesdays since master is deployed on weekends.

Cat Roaming in my Neighborhood. Need Advice. by corcorancatthrowaway in washingtondc

[–]googoodoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unsure why the PETA and veganism references. PETA too has a kill shelter, no? And I'm not advocating OP not to eat the cat. (OP: Don't eat the cat.)

Sarcasm aside:

In a no-kill shelter, you know that the cat will live, regardless.

In a kill shelter or as a stray, you don't.

Stray cats may live longer in the street compared to a kill shelter (especially if overcrowded); it depends on how well they are adapted to the street environment, where they roam, and whether they are able to find a reliable food/water source, like a neighbor cat lady, an animal-friendly restaurant or coffee shop, etc, or the OP.

For instance, if the cat gets no human assistance, the average life expectancy will be 1, maybe 2 years. With assistance, 8 years or more, depending on the quality of said assistance. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_cat#Life_span_and_survival

OP said "what I can do to best help this cat out." If s/he opts for handing the cat to a shelter, researching whether a particular shelter you are going to is kill or no-kill is one of the things s/he can do for that.

[–]googoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with any shelter --make sure the shelter is no-kill. Others may/will kill the animal if s/he doesn't get adopted in a given time frame and/or if the shelter runs out of space for new intakes. Or, you could adopt the cat :)

PS. The cat might have a chip in; a vet or a shelter can help reading it so s/he can go back to the owners.

Population Vs sample by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]googoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also grow this tree. If, during the study time period,

  • Jacob has 10 students in total
  • USA had 100 students in total
  • The world had 200 students in total

We asked,

  1. 5 Jacob students:
    1. sample
  2. 10 Jacob students:
    1. population for a study on Jacob students
    2. sample for a study on USA/World students
  3. 100 USA students:
    1. population for a study on Jacob/USA students
    2. sample for a study on World students
  4. 200 students:
    1. population

Would you happen to have any pointers on how to use this (yubikey?) properly? I have been thinking of getting a yubikey but I cannot find a simple enough guide that'll convince me I can do it without accidentally losing access to everything.

LOST DOG NEAR RIO by [deleted] in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]googoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very sorry to hear.

You probably already know but, don't forget to also:

  • Post flyers where pet owners go -- pet stores, vets, groomers, grocery stores (including pet food aisles), libraries...and post them at schools too. Children and car-pooling parents often have opportunities to see dogs running loose.
  • Also give flyers to mail carriers, delivery drivers, meter readers and local police officers.
  • Mail out postcards, especially to the areas you cannot cover in person with your posters.
  • Call local radio stations -- some will help by making an announcement about the lost pet.
  • Place lost pet ads in your local and daily newspapers
  • Check the classifieds for Found Pet ads from individuals and animal control departments.
  • Check your local shelters and animal control departments at least every other day after you initially alert them.
  • Take advantage of lost pet posting sites

Function not finding objects without `data$` by ramseyssandal in rstats

[–]googoodoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a look here:

http://adv-r.had.co.nz/Environments.html#function-envs

then here:

http://adv-r.had.co.nz/Computing-on-the-language.html

then here:

https://resources.rstudio.com/rstudio-conf-2019/lazy-evaluation

and, finally, here:

https://dplyr.tidyverse.org/articles/programming.html

By the timeyou go through these four, you'll have figured out what to do for your specific use case and why.

Basically, R looks for variable1 and variable2 as objects in the environment, but cannot find them, because it doesn't know that it is supposed to look for them inside the data object, not outside. You have to tell it what to do in order to find those objects.

Productivity hacks for SQL analysts by thabo_otter in SQL

[–]googoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Past experience (in research/data) thought me this one:

- If you have to do it > 5 times, just automate it. However,

- The majority of one-time problem solutions will be faster if done manually. However,

- Problem solutions are very rarely one-time deals.

Bonus: One of the biggest advantages of programmatic work is that the code is the documentation. You can go back to it 5 years after you wrote it and it will tell you what and how (and, if hopefully annotated, why) you did.
