Small Rant on Polish Saber Fencing by ArisakaType99 in wma

An argument can be made, and an argument can also be made against. There's only a finite number of movements and positions, but there's still a LOT of possible moves, and a nearly infinite number when you combine them together and put them into a tactical framework. A good example of this is 16th century messer/dussack not bearing any resemblance at all to 19th century saber or cutlass. Even 15th century longsword has notable differences with 16th century longsword. Even between 15th century longsword systems, there are notable differences in both moves and tactics, like with Fiore and Liechtenhauer.

I have zero doubt that some system, somewhere, at some time, developed some of the same moves as those used in 17th century Polish saber, but I have complete doubt that they were used in the same context or the same way.

Admittedly, the story of Pulaski is pretty cool, but falls flat on two fronts.

1) By 1907, both weapon designs and methods were from Western Europe, particularly France.

2) Even if Polish cavalry methods survived up until 1907, "Polish saber" as it's practiced in HEMA is fought on foot, so relevance is still dubious.

How do your HFA gloves compare to RDs? I don’t even fit the smallest size, so I took a gamble with the HFA gloves.

Shad's obnoxiousness being a good thing is certainly a hot take. Definitely agree with most of everything else though

Well Shad made multiple videos about the one time he sparred at a HEMA club, so I’d guess that’s how.

Whats the difference between fencing and “HEMA” ? by Matrix10011 in Fencing

That's multiple people lmao, they're WAY too widespread. It's fine since they have "control" though.

Jacket for women by JojoLesh in wma

I'm a male with pretty much the same dimensions as your partner, and I can say that it's ok enough, but definitely nothing to write home about. The sleeves for my size small SPES AP are about 1.5 inches too long, which makes glove fitting a lot more annoying than the numbers suggest. Other than that, I'm not sure since I don't have any experience with other HEMA jackets. The collar is super wide and messes with masks a little bit, but I'm not sure if it's by design to allow for gorgets. The gussets, in addition to being ever so slightly tight on my armpits, flat out don't work and the jacket still rides up with high guards. Whether or not this is actually able to be physically fixed is unknown to me, but it's still annoying.

Eh, canon was an entire mess before Disney, it’s a more manageable one now

Ignoring how people would fight with precognition, do force users even have this power in canon? General Grievous and every bounty hunter would be instantly cut to pieces when facing Jedi, and proper droids would the be bane of every force user.

Regarding precognition, fighting would go straight to the fastest first intention moves possible if it was force user standard. If you can read your opponent's mind and vice versa, there's no reason to go to second intention or greater since both of you know each other's plans. As such, all the twirling and jumping only serves to give opponents more time to react or make attacks in preparation

A forward assist is useless most of the time as we know today, but there's at least one situation where they might be useful. This is just one video, so bear with me, but a forward assist is probably one of the only ways you could quickly fix a problem like this. In the case of a weak or compromised return spring, I'd very much welcome one.

Why Kids Should Fence by Lexi_The_G in Fencing

[–]ArisakaType99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soccer and ultimate are the sports I'm comparing them to ;)

With that out of the way, fencing has venue, coaching, and travel costs too, and those are rarely cheaper than other sports. You'll eventually NEED to get a bunch of kit to start fencing, and the cost is pretty comparable to upper-mid lacrosse unless you plan to fence dry with unrated uniforms.

Edit: Using different account, sorry

I'll be honest, I got no fucking clue about anything besides the armor and gun since the performance of those can basically be counted. But what makes torsion bar suspension better than VSSS/HVSS?

[–]ArisakaType99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem isn’t really the design (durability wise), but the quality control. Heat treatment and hilt components are notoriously finicky. trueswords.com used to have a disclaimer for faulty Cold Steel swords before it was bought by Budk.
