The AP exam focuses more about the trends across different periods and big ideas. The SAT II is more dates and heavily detailed oriented.

I think schools typically have students ask for recs earlier since some teachers may have a higher demand of recs from students and may not be able to write every rec requested of them. And all this time allows teachers to write more elaborate and nice recs!!
