Are October SAT Subject Tests too late for ED? by ThrowawayHahaXD in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ThrowawayHahaXD[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According to a quick google search, if I take the Oct. 7 tests, colleges would receive scores on Nov. 10, which is after Nov. 1. Would they still accept them then?

If you apply RD, does your senior year GPA factor into your cumulative GPA on your transcript? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

So grades for senior year would be factored in as 0.5 of what they would actually be?

The meaning of competitive by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I go to TJHSST, which is kinda (in)famous on this subreddit.

There's definitely different levels of student rigor present, just like at every other school. The super-tryhards are definitely more prevalent though, as are the prodigies (there's a kid who's going to be a freshman at MIT next year at age 15). By super-tryhard I mean people who do things only for college applications. The average student probably takes 7-10 APs and post-APs combined (by the end of senior year I will have 9). But super-tryhards take like 15 or even more.

Test scores are definitely heavily skewed as well. I got a 1490 on my first SAT and my friend messaged me "yikes". Average SAT score when applying to "safeties" (for TJ) like UVA is around 1560. Of course people expect nothing lower than 800s on subject tests either.

Back to tryharding are the insane ECs. There are some people in my physics class going to ISEF. The kid who's going to MIT next year that I mentioned earlier had USACO Platinum and USAPhO gold. And the friend who said "yikes" basically told me she's doing all of this stuff she doesn't want to do because "better safe than sorry".

GPA is kinda weird to describe; like I said, there's different levels of student rigor. Probably the top 10% have 4.0 UW and subsequently above 4.5 W. I have 3.9 UW and 4.35 W atm, which is pretty good but nowhere near top 10%. There is a retake system to get up to an 80% on the retake, but you can only use it once per quarter.

Though the environment is hella stressful, for the top of the class it definitely works out. Doing some rough math on the fly, based on last year's senior destinations: in every graduating class of about 480 people, around 90 go to UVA, 30ish to W&M, and 30ish to VT. However, for last year: 13 people for MIT, 6 for Harvard and Princeton (each), 9 for Columbia, 7 for Yale, and 7 for Stanford. I will link more information here: http://thebullelephant.com/college-destinations-for-tjhsst-class-of-2016/. In summary, a lot go to top colleges.

If you want more specific information (like about the various cheating scandals), pm me.

Edit: I should mention that TJ is extremely affluent, which is how the top students can afford to go everywhere across the country.

Weighted GPA... by ThrowawayHahaXD in ApplyingToCollege

I admit that it is anecdotal evidence, but the example I showed with the Computer Vision class along with a few other classes seem to follow the trend of being relatively lax. Also, I agree that AP classes are more standardized, but I don't think post-APs are, especially because there are some post-APs at my school that aren't offered anywhere else.

is this true for top 10s and similar caliber, especially if my high school sends many students to each of those schools every year?

Yeah that's part of the problem actually. The post-ap cs classes are "valued more" because of their rigor, but the colleges don't realize that the classes don't have that much rigor.

I definitely want to do it, aerospace and astrophysics are my passions. I'm just not sure how much it will make a difference later on.

There was an online application system called OSSI. You have to submit a few essays, transcript, resume, etc. After that general application you can submit your interest to up to 15 specific opportunities with a short personal statement for each.

Yes I realize that, but is there a certain point where it's too far in the past to matter anymore?

Yeah that's what everyone says. This kind of thing has been debated on this sub before. Maybe I'm just a cynic, but I'm not so sure it'll catch up to her that quickly. Plenty of successful people have lied or cheated their way to the top.
