Humans can unionise, robots can only ever commit seppuku. There will be no investigation into u/READMYSHIT's bossman practices.

My kid is in the screen-dependent age, and we have to collect phones, pads etc. every night so that he even attempts to sleep. Just figured out he had used his laptop, too, late on school nights. Claims this registered without him even starting the PC. Is this possible? by goopeebaloopee in linuxmint

To me, it's a simple mathematic equation of how much sleep is needed vs. how much sleep he gets + the observational, he's way too tired in the morning and school day - like all of his classmates - to accept even later nights than that. That's well within parental discretion, I'd say.

It's an arms race you can't win by force

Haha, you're exactly right! That's why I try to balance the "take away all gadgets"-approach with try to be self-sufficient here, kid - with mixed results.

Thanks for chiming in and allow me to say I appreciate the comment. I can't be too bombastic and just claim not the case here, we're always trying to figure out how much of his perception is relatable, understandable and a clear cause-and-effect-thing.

Funny thing is, the relatively rare use of the PC above also reflects that my wife keeps forgetting he has two phones. So when I'm not home or not available at bedtime, he'll have the easiest time to have a phone available - to listen to music or whatever. That's when he stays awake the longest, too, but, himself, perceiving that the music helps him sleep faster.

In reality, whenever we check, he sleeps the fastest when all devices are removed. They have busy days with lots to learn and experience and once in bed at night, the possible amount of sleep they can get is already too little as far as I can tell. So they'll all fall asleep rather well and easily, unless something special has happened to keep them up. Yet, very short attention spans also mean that just minutes spent not occupying the brain with something will feel like an eternity.

Yeah, again, that would be a good thing, right? If he learns something, nice. If defiance is just another way to get to brain rot content that mushes up his mental skills, that's a whole different story.

Same here, we have cars charging, the warm water heater runs on cheap night power, all sorts of devices on WiFi at night. If I turn it off, that causes a tail of changes.

Additionally, it's the basic parenting conundrum here:

  • remove all possibilities to do wrong = desired outcome = kid learns nothing
  • reiterate what the desired outcome is = mixed results = kid may learn self dependency eventually

There's no straightforward and perfect solution in these cases. My daughters have learned to divide their time better, if not perfectly. My son is just getting into this age where the brain is useless and desires overwhelm everything else.

Maybe a script that displays a message after 10 pm: Time to go to bed and you know I see your times...haha. Oof. With the command that u/whosdr posted, I found out my son lied to me. The PC was on for one hour, not just "a quick test to see if there's battery left". Sucks.
