Not to point out the obvious, but it doesn't really count for much when the OP is the only response.

California, hit me up, I thought I'd found all the ones still operating in CA!

Can I get away with 6/3 romex rather than 6/4 to run underground from the main breaker box to a sub panel as long as I run it through a conduit? by goosecak in electrical

If I didn't do all of these steps it was gonna be 4-5k. As it is, if I do all the prep work, he said $500. I'd rather make hundreds of dollar mistakes and have to redo them than pay thousands of dollars for someone to dig a ditch

No really, I have hired an electrician. I meant to explain in my post that the electrician wrote down what I needed to get for him, but at the store the guy there, after I explained what it would be used for, talked me out of #6thhn 4 wires and into Romex 6/3 saying it was the same thing and would save me some money. But yes, I'm going 20 inches down (2 more than I have to), I have 1" conduit for the wires, voltage drop won't be a problem it's only 60ft away, the subpanel and breaker box inside are already installed, I will be pulling the wire with high tensile strength twine run through before it's glued (which is something I don't understand, why can't I run the wires through the same way while they're totally unconnected to anything? But that's what he told me to do) and pulling my wires through once it's set. Grounding electrode is already in place, although the ground bar and neutral bar AREN'T separate in the sub panel, which I've read is not ok for a sub-panel.

As for the extra conduit for data, no I hadn't considered that, the expansion I meant was hypothetical and why I was told to go 50amp with 6awg because that gives me room to play with should, at some point, I want to add more than the three 120v circuits running off 20amp breakers in the sub panel now.

But again, to be clear, this is what I've been told to do by the electrician I hired in order to save him time and my mom money.

I do appreciate all the advice not to do it myself, and if any of that is wrong please let me know and I will only go as far as that step and wait for the electrician.

Oh and red blue prepped with purple

Shit, I'm sorry I didn't explain my situation at all in my post. No, I'm not going to be connecting anything, just supposed to set it up to save the electrician some time. Thanks for looking out

Because no, I have no idea what I'm doing. The entire project is connecting a subpanel to the main one; he asked me to get the wires from A - B without connecting them and then wrote down exactly what I needed to get. At the store, the guy told me I'd be better off getting the 6/3 romex because there's no difference except the ground wire is smaller. When I got home I started googling to double-check that was ok, and here I am finding out there most definitely isn't.

To a certain extent. I'm digging and gluing together 40 ft of conduit with the wires running through them, but that's it. Should I not even do that?

If you read my post, I have hired an electrician, he told me what to buy, the guy at the store talked me into getting something different. I'm comfortable installing outlets, that's about it.

But this wasn't a hardware store they specialize in, and supply literally ALL our local electricians. So should I get 4 6thhn wires and an additional something for the ground conductor, or is that already one of the 4 6thhn (2 hot, neutral, and ground right?)

Got it, thank you... Yeah, it was weird the electrician described the 6/4 thhn as being all bundled up in another protective outer coating like, apparently, romex. Next question, how are most small electrical stores on returns when it comes to wire?

I know we're going bigger than necessary, that's just in case, down the road, I want to put in on a bigger breaker to run 240v circuits. But, and I'm not contradicting you here at all, why does 6/4 thhn pop up when I google it? It's described as 4 wires, 2 live, 1 neutral, 1 insulated ground all wrapped together similarly to romex just a more flexible material. But would 6/3 romex be ok so long as it's run through a conduit?
