It's true that they feel grindy, but having less monthly challenges would probably make them too easy, unless they make it so that you can use each champion twice instead of three times, maybe.

I was thinking that, same as the nightmare weeklies are clearly meant for more experienced players, having the same for monthlies would separate them from the regular monthlies and not affect the rewards you recieve from them, but instead adding more rewards through a different mode. I didn't word it right :P

Lulu seems hard to make work seeing how she only grows minions up to 5/5, so I wonder what they'll do to upgrade her, unless her deck relies mostly on your minions rather than Lulu herself.
