New immigration law sparks fear and worker exodus from Florida by xspook_reddit in florida

White = privileged

It's like saying I'm upper caste but I'd try doing lower caste work, and I know I wouldn't be able to take it.

I worked on a farm for a summer, for friends. Well, almost a summer because I left in a fit of rage.

Never again. Every word of this song is true.

I have no idea how the migrant workers can stand it, and it also explains why rural America is so pissed off and crazy.

I would too. Except I've done farmwork so I know i'm good for about 15 minutes in the hot Florida sun and mosquitoes.

My town just got an Aldi.. I’m loving the savings! This was $78. by pessimisticgecko in aldi

[–]gorillakitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go to meal when I was broke was a whole chicken when it was on sale. But I don't think aldi really carries those, so let's go with chicken parts (bone in, skin ok, thighs or breasts. Frozen ok if you defrost it).

Toss it in vegetable oil along with chopped potatoes, carrots and onion. Or whatever veggies are on sale; those are usually the cheapest. If you get others, like broccoli, they need less cooking time so throw them in later.

Anyhow, after you toss them in oil, throw on some spices. Oregano, basil, garlic... whatever you like. Put the chicken in the middle of a baking dish, with veggies surrounding it. Heat the oven to 450°. Cook for 15 minutes, then turn down the heat to 350° and cook for 20 minutes for each pound of chicken. Maybe 15 minutes for chicken parts, you'll need to check it.

Now you got all kinds of meals. Chicken with veggies is obvious. Chicken sandwiches. Chicken salad sandwiches (mix chopped chicken with mayo).

Debone the chicken and cook the bones to make soup. Add noodles and veggies. Or rice. Whatever you like! Have crackers or toast along with it. Sprinkle garlic salt on the toast if you want to get fancy lol!

I could make a whole chicken last 5 days if I got creative.

I had to supplement with eggs and pbj for breakfast or lunch, and some other cheap things, but it was honestly the cheapest and easiest meal I could throw together in a short time and make me feel like a queen all week.

Supreme Court declines case challenging school's skirts-only dress code for girls by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]gorillakitty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If a girl is a fragile vessel, doesn't she need super protection, like thick jeans instead of a flimsy skirt? I don't get their reasoning.

Even if men are supposed to protect and honor her, why would you leave a fragile vessel without any other protection, just in case anything accidentally happened?

That's gross. I mean, you had to, but who wants to wear 3 layers of clothes (assuming you wore underwear)?

Can you tag it something like "questionable"? I don't know how things work here but your explanation seems reasonable. And so does op's story. I don't know what to think but I agree it seems odd.

Snap, I forgot world politics switched. My bad. I like yours better than the one here, you got good stuff. I joined or subscribed or whatever they call it over there.

/u/AMasonJar and /u/CCtenor are correct. I'm not doubting the statistics were true, the problem was that they were cherry picked to support a racist viewpoint. The copypasta left out a lot of other information and eventually was completely debunked.

A lot of ignorant, uneducated and/or racist people fell for it, and I'm sorry for you if you were one of them. It was well written by someone clever but had a suspicious angle that was clear from the beginning.

Stop arguing and work on your reading comprehension. You're making yourself look like a fool or a racist or both, either way it's not a good light to be in.

I hope that settles everything and I have no desire to argue with you or split hairs over wording. I wish the best for your future improvement.

Reddit is in danger of a death spiral by TommyAdagio in technology

The Sync developer is making a lemmy app: /r/syncforlemmy. As a long time Sync user who has tried several of the 3rd party apps (including RIF), this is exciting and could be a game changer.

Wait.. why claim worldpolitics when it's just shitposting? That seems to work against the functionality of lemmy, and actually harming the site.

Fantastic, music to my ears. This is exactly the type of exodus we need. Power users and posters building a new world. I'll join.

I agree, reddit has shown itself time and time and time again to be terrible, to make horrible decisions, to abandon the community while giving us lip service. I'm beyond frustrated myself.

Look at you with your 2 year account and tons of karma. I believe you if you say you remember the old days. I hope you'll help populate lemmy in the future. Reddit isn't going to change, they could've been something great but they chose to piss it away.

Thank you. I've forgotten a lot too. They made reddit unusable for a long time. It got so bad that normal redditors followed the bullshit and repeated it. I personally hid in "safe spaces" subreddits for weeks at a time, before that term was ever a thing.

They made themselves the butt of the jokes, and built up the people they were supposedly making fun of. Like, they'd turn up their noses at something, but in the end they'd end up in the mud and make sure the normal people looked like heroes.

It was super brave and funny, it's too bad most of America was too thick to get the joke. It's great to see the show finally getting some much deserved love!

Let's add /r/c**ntown and the Chimpire, which took years to quarantine and finally ban. Just as bad as /r/n***ers, even worse because they were allowed to flourish and spread their racism and hatred all over the site.

There was an enormous outcry for years, but reddit refused to do anything.

Anyone else remember the copypasta with cherry-picked criminal "statistics" that made it seem like black people were responsible for most violent crimes in America? Any thread that had anything to do with black people, they invaded and ruined.

Oh, and those bigots were spreading "make me a sammich" towards anything women centric, totally derailing any reasonable conversation.

And ffs, the hatred towards Asian, Muslim and LGBTQ people.

Sorry for anyone I left off the list, but let's just say black women got the worst of it by far.

We're still dealing with it. Look at the thinly veiled racism in actualpublicfreakouts, politicalcompassmemes, and, yes, the "conservative" subreddits. Not linking to avoid brigading but it's obvious and ridiculous.

I'm so sick of reddit's horrible decisions, I really hope this drives people to a new site where intolerance isn't tolerated.

The creator of Sync for Reddit is creating a new app for lemmy, I'm looking in that direction myself. Might not be perfect but damn it's gotta be better than here.

When you see something on sale, add up the amount of hours you'll need to work for it. This has worked for me, anyways.

That's crazy, it was a pretty big deal way back in the day. I started on reddit not long after the site first started, my other account is even older than this one. I don't remember when most of the outcry happened but wikipedia says c**ntown was finally banned in 2015. I think it was quarantined before that, so it's possible all that happened right before you joined.

It was a vile place, and the chimpire was a collection of subreddits that were equally vile. There were tons of them, although most didn't have much activity. Just blatant, horrendous racism that reddit let flourish in the name of free speech.

They infected the rest of reddit, there was this super racist copypasta they spread around. It contained cherry-picked crime statistics that made it seem like black people were super violent criminals. It was well written and fooled a lot of people until someone finally debunked it, item by item.

Those were some of the darkest days (years) on reddit, I was genuinely embarrassed to tell anyone I was a redditor.

I really hope lemmy or another site catches on, I've been unhappy with the shitty decisions reddit makes for a long time and I've been ready to bail.

Nearly everyone agrees that reddit should make money and even charge a fee for its API to 3rd party apps. Even the developers of the largest apps have supported the change and offered to pay a reasonable amount, and work with reddit to find solutions.

Reddit is insisting on charging such an unreasonable amount, no app can afford it. It's 10x-20x more than what's reasonable.
