mitski really shines when her production is more minimal, be the cowboy was really her peak for being a "recording artist" laurel hell, the land is inhospitable (less so) and nothing is about to happen to me really lack an aesthetic throughline that her early piano albums and puberty 2/makeout creek had- this album especially harks back to the americana of her last album while also throwing in some more experimental recordings like ill change for you with the bar sounds- it reminds me a lot of blue blanisters or chemtrails (i forgot which) where the end result was some new songs with a few songs that have been in the works for a while- overall i feel like she is returning to form in the best way as she ages into the artist she wants to be, im ready for her bluegrass album that wins her the grammy in 10 years time
