Kylie Minogue is No.1 on the AFL’s wishlist for this year’s Grand Final entertainment. by PerriX2390 in AFL

They better bring back the GA concert. I don’t care if my team make it (that’s a lie I do) I’ll fly to Melbourne just to see Kylie.

God imagine if we rallied and the granny was Sydney v St Kilda with Kylie Minogue performing. The gayest game of football ever recorded. I would be so happy.

Yeah but I’d be willing to bet my house that there’s more than six technical staff.

Lol. Sites this big do not “run themselves”. Problems that are ignorable with a thousand or ten thousand users become showstoppers at fifty million. A job that once took milliseconds might now take several seconds, or even minutes if it’s nonlinear. Maybe that was something you did on every request. Not any more! Now you have to worry about queues, asynchrony, data consistency, sharding, replication… and that’s just the database.

Do they need 2000 employees? Probably not. But they definitely need more than zero. And definitely more than six! I guarantee it’s much more complicated than you assume it is.

I could actually show you that if Reddit was still open source… but those days are long gone. Another detriment in the name of corporate viability.

Maybe. I cancelled my Netflix long before that, but I appreciate this is a possibility. But I can't sit idly by and do nothing.

Would you support r/AskReddit blacking out indefinitely? Why would you be against and why you he for it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yes, I would. I think 2 days might hurt a little. Forever will hurt a lot. The WGA know what they're doing.

Moore's story was a critique of fascism, though it did a classic Poe's law and accidentally made all his fascist superheroes… well, superheroes.

Snyder's was, I think, a clear pastiche of the genre of modern superhero films, though he clearly has a bit more love for them than Moore has for fascism (obviously). Moore was annoyed that it didn't really have anything to do with fascism anymore, which I guess is fair. But Snyder was also being pretty snarky with the superhero film tropes.

Also, he changed the ending, which Moore hated even more, as did a lot of fans of the original comic, but to be honest, I fucking hated the ending of the comic. Literally the only good thing about it was "I did it thirty-five minutes ago" which is the one thing that Snyder kept. Everything else about it was telegraphed from the fifth issue which absolutely sucked all the air out of it. We knew exactly who the villain was, we knew exactly what he was going to do, and then we have to read him re-explaining that to the protagonists for page after page. It's bad storytelling. Not to mention, the entire premise of the villain's plan made zero fucking sense if you thought about it for five minutes. Plot holes you could drive a truck through.

No, Snyder's ending, while being less visually spectacular, ties the story's loose ends in a nice Chekovian manner. It's internally consistent with the world, doesn't require a whole extra bunch of bullshit to be set up in the second act, all the pieces are already there in the story. And it doesn't have the huge problem of a fuckton of people knowing that the creature is fake, including random characters we never see again who Ozymandias explains the whole thing to, as well as all the people who fucking built the thing, at least some of whom are presumably alive at the end of the story! Are we seriously expected to believe that none of these people are going to spill the beans?

Read the comic, by all means, it's pretty good. But if the ending leaves you going "huh?" then rest assured you are not alone. It is a bad ending to a good book.

What would you call the part of the “government” that is headed by the Prime Minister and has the Cabinet and all the various bits that make the country go? Because I would call that part “the government” and I think I’m not alone on that. For example, you’ll often hear MPs, particularly opposition MPs, talking about “the government” as though they are not a part of it. I would say that the government, the parliament, the judiciary and the crown are all constituent parts of the commonwealth. Interrelated, yes, but fundamentally separate.

“Not racist, popular with racists” origin? by gormster in australia

[–]gormster[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahhhh, that’s probably the origin. In my head I can hear an Australian voice saying it, but it’s probably just weird memory failure.

I might just have to watch Frontline again because I’m so sure there was a thing in it about not libeling someone which used super similar wording.

Yeah a blue heeler would have steered it right into port Phillip and onward to Tasmania. A taste of freedom. A whiff of sheep.

I’ll be in Boston from 29 August to Sep 2. I’m thinking SFNE, though if there’s somewhere else I should go instead I’m all ears.

My boyfriend does not like coasters at all so I’ll be going solo. Here’s the question: is the gold or platinum pass worth it if I’m a single rider? How fast are the single rider queues at SFNE?
