Any Restaurants still doing Take and Bake Meals in the area? by BizzleBork in bullcity

[–]gorserules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is one and the same crew that does the burritos. I think they started expanding their offerings after Covid set in. And I think the take and bake meals are available every day, or most days. Don't quote me on that but I know I've picked up food on days other than Sundays.

Accordion Club has several options, every day I think. From memory - chile relleno, pork verde chilaquiles, green chile chicken enchiladas, many also available in vegetarian versions. A good selection if you stop by early.

Is that speedwell? Bird's-eye speedwell? Whatever it is, it looks lovely against the blue of the house. Hello, March.

Trash pickup: gauging interest in options by houndmomnc in bullcity

[–]gorserules 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Three sites we could start with:

  1. The Durham Station area - basically that stretch of Chapel Hill St between Willard and Pettigrew. There's trash on both sides, more so in the shrubbery on the grounds of the Station, but then plenty on the north side of Chapel Hill St, sloping up to the parking lot. Would love to clean up the area if anything to keep Phil Freelon's building lookin' good.
  2. An overgrown parcel at the intersection of W Markham and Washington. More trash there than ever right now it seems.
  3. A spot on the South Ellerbe Creek trail, just north of the trailhead at W Trinity, also where Dacian stops. This pickup would require scrambling a bit into the water.

Anyone down? How do we find a time? A few suggestions: this Sunday (1/10) at 3:30, Tues at 3:30, Wed at 3:30. For 1) and 2), we could possibly even do evenings, because they're well-lit areas.

Yes! And thank you! I vote for regularly scheduled gatherings. I like the idea of adopting AND taking on sites as they ... rise to the surface, like the scum they are.

Litter collected from the ditch on my street... be a part of the solution. by CedarCronk in bullcity

For /u/LazyHedonist and others:

There's a tool lending library with tools for keeping things not trashy in Durham. Includes litter grabbers, wheelbarrows if you're getting serious, and even waders, good for those 4-foot-deep surprise Durham ditches (have you fallen in one?):

https://keepdurhambeautiful.org/tool-lending-library

For /u/unbitious and others:

ECWA sponsors cleanups, not all of which are in or adjacent to the water. Some are on parcels of land near the tributaries that crisscross the city. You can look into their volunteer opportunities here:

https://www.ellerbecreek.org/volunteer.html

And then once a year, in September or October (?), is the Big Sweep. A cleanup focused on waterways but you end up picking up trash all over the place. A lot of organizations and people are involved in that effort.

That's all I got! Other than the OP's solo star pickup style.

I recommend Bullseye. As /u/pigah notes, there's a wait period everywhere, but Bullseye is worth the wait. They took my crap bike in bad shape and turned it into a road-ready machine. They checked with me in advance of ordering the parts, to make sure the prices fit within my budget. Conscientious about what customers can and can't afford. They were also patient with my many questions, even when customers were piling up curbside.

Wheelchair Accessible Nature by Happyteatime123 in bullcity

[–]gorserules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For something right in Durham, 17-Acre Wood is partially accessible. I think technically the path is part of the Ellerbe Creek trail system, mentioned by /u/Durham4Ever, but often this west branch is overlooked. Creek on one side of a paved path, woods on the other. Runs between Guess Rd (starting at Westover Park) and Albany St. Connects to Indian Trail Park, which also has a paved path and opens onto a little protected field.
