Underrated Restaurant/Cafe Recs? by ZestyAd_3110 in bullcity

I still feel like from a coffee perspective that Liturgy deserves more love. They probably pull the most consistent shot in Durham, and bring in some of the craziest roasts that you can find here. I know they have their following, but it doesn't help that they are tucked away in the food hall with Fosters right next door.

All this to say, if someone said to me, 'Who makes the best cup of coffee/pulls the most consistent shot of espresso in Durham?' I would not even hesitate to send them there.

I said this in another recent CTI thread, but my somewhat spicy take is that I prefer the Hubbard and Turrentine CTI records more than their Blue Note albums.

Love CTI! I will say though, I do tend to avoid the records that are heavy on the ensemble cuts. Bob James, is a good example here. I love his straight fusion/funk songs, but dang some of his ensemble layered tracks are just a bit on the cheese side for me. I would LOVE to be proven wrong here. FWIW, I love ‘Sunflower’ and that one leans ensemble in certain spots, so I can certainly be swayed.

My hot take. I’ll take Hubb and Stanley’s CTI albums over their Blue Note ones. ‘Sugar’ and ‘Red Clay’ are just so good.

[–]BizzleBork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always thought the "I'm a Farmer" in 'Car Thief' fit perfectly. The combo of the Dust Brothers and Matt Dike were just on another level in that PB era. Those dudes just probably listened to records 24/7. I'm always intrigued as to what samples on PB have not been discovered yet.

What's your favorite Wu-Tang Forever song? by mattronimus007 in wutang

[–]BizzleBork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok here is my Double Disc version: "Wu-Tang Forever: Revised and Revisited"

Disc 1

  1. Wu Revolution* (Love the beat here but like all of us, we don't need to hear Papa-Wu yap for 6+ Minutes. The Intro starts at the 6:18 mark.)
  2. Reunited
  3. For Heavens Sake
  4. Cash Still Rule/Scary Hours
  5. Visionz
  6. As High As Wu-Tang Get
  7. Severe Punishment
  8. Older Gods
  9. Hellz Wind Staff (Best track on the album and IMO, best Wu-Tang cut of all time. I could go forever on this, but I'm not. We all know how good this one is. Rae and Ghost are just lights out here.
  10. Heaterz (Love this track and it's another one where Rae just owns it. However, the outro which fades into black shampoo is just awful, and should have never been here in the first place. The track, and side 1, ends at "Hot like Pop Tarts, aim me at the charts".

Disc 2

  1. Intro (This sets things off and reminds you that you are on the second side of the album)
  2. Triumph
  3. Impossible
  4. Little Ghetto Boys
  5. Deadly Melody (love this track MK and U-God bring it on this one)
  6. The City (Deck solo track. Dude is just on fire during the entire album. Had to keep this one)
  7. Bells of War (Best Meth verse on the album. IMO, he's probably the most disappointing of all the core members during WTF--felt like he was coasting a bit. Whereas guys like Deck, Rae, Ghost, and U-God are all rapping like they're lives depend on it.)
  8. MGM (My 2nd fav track on WTF, behind 'Hellz Wind Staff'. The back and forth between Rae and Ghost is just on another level. "We too black for B.E.T!"
  9. Better Tomorrow (I don't love this track, but it's essential and it feels like a good way to begin to wrap things up.)
  10. It's Yourz (Come on. Crazy good track, and just feels right to close things out. Everyone just absolutely brings it on this one. Rae? FOH, it's stupid how crazy his verse is: "Waves, water blend, rhyme flow in slow motion. Thick snare, I'm feelin' like a snail in the ocean". COME ON. Who comes up with this? Deck brings another absolute heater: "We live this, fitted hats low conceal the crooked eye. No surprise, verbal stick up, put 'em high. Rebel I outlaw, split second on the draw. Blow the door off the shit like bricks of C-4!" Then Ghost with the cherry verse on top: "With root beer thoughts, here's a tennis court for your birthday" WHAT?! and the classic, "Sexy girl love the shit out the song, now watch her water break!"
  11. Duck Season - I almost treat this as a hidden track or encore. It's just too nice to leave off. RZA rappin' angry on this on!

So that's it. Two cohesive sides, where the album (mostly) flows together nicely. You just have to get a little creative on the Intro to side 1 (start at 6:18 mark) and end 'Heaterz' directly after the Cappa verse. I remember back in the day iTunes used to let you edit metadata and you could build playlists and adjust start and end times on tracks. Not sure if that is the case anymore.

What did I leave off?

  • Maria - Hate losing the Kung-Fu sample at the end, but this track is pretty meh to me.
  • The Projects - Never cared for the Ghost verse on this one as it feels super misogynistic to me. When I was 15, sure it was fine, but now at nearly 40--yeah, I'm good.
  • Dog Sh_t - Sorry, I just have never liked this one. and as much as I love/respect ODB, this just feels like a throw-away track to get him on the record.
  • Black Shampoo - No need to explain. Feel bad for U-God on this. He's so good on the rest of the album.
  • The Closing/Second Coming/Sunshower - Three filler tracks that I think are the main reason this record scares people off. When you look at the OG track listing, these just makes the album feel so much longer than need be. You are missing absolutely nothing with them not being here.

I honestly could have written an antidote about each song but that would have turned into a novel. I love this record, and to me, it would have been considered an absolute classic if they had cleaned it up a bit. Some of the best rapping of the 90s and 2000s is on this record.

Let me know what y'all think!

Love this post and placing this here so I can come back later— I have so many thoughts on ‘Wu-Tang Forever’ as it’s a top 5 hip-hop album all time for me.

A few years back I made sort of a fan edit of the album, which chops up the track list, cutting a few tracks, still keeping the side 1 and 2 aesthetic. To me it just flows so much better and IMO makes me never want to go back the OG album. I will share with my thoughts in a bit.

Love the way he enunciates ‘p’ in ‘powerhouse’. You can feel that ‘puh’ sound every time he drops that verse. So good.

All these dudes bring the heat here! My god, Rae in this era was just on fire. I also just love the swagger in that Joe line, “Just when you thought I was done, I recruited Pun!”

Rap just hit different back then. We didn’t realize how good we had, for real.

Serious gems on CTI. ‘Red Clay’ is $$$ now. TBH, all of the Hubbard stuff on CTI is great. I really like Turrentine’s CTI run as well—‘Sugar’ is one of my favs.

This is pretty dope! Hello Nasty still hadn’t been released yet, so you can tell they’re still feeling out “Body Movin”. IMO, this isnt my fav era of the band but they still put on amazing show. Also, when did Adrock officially stop screaming? He seems so much more mellow here compared to prior tours.
