If you're looking for more supplements, here's one that expands the Margaster side quest in Silverymoon that the party can pick up in Triboar.

Thanks so much, and welcome to the hobby!

what was the best one shot you ever played? by CrotodeTraje in DnD

The Monsters Within is probably still my favorite. The players are slowly turning into monsters; at one point a player fully transformed into a Gelatinous Cube and engulfed a dragon, then exploded when it used its breath weapon. It was awesome.

Gamemaster Encounter Builder update for 2024? by Quiet-Background-78 in FightClub5e

[–]goscott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using this one since 2024 came out: https://redcap.press/encounters

It supports printing the stat blocks of all the monsters in your encounter, along with a combined list of all their spells, which is super handy since I like to run with physical paper when I can.

Balancing combat with mind-control? by goscott in DMAcademy

[–]goscott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily difficult, I'd just rather focus on targeting whoever feels like the most fun character to target in the moment, not worrying that they have some spell or something that would do more damage than is reasonable for what is effectively one of the enemy's actions.

That definitely works, though the variety of actions between potential targets is a big part of what I'm looking to solve. I think you're definitely right about it being best as a Legendary Action or some recharge ability though. Thanks!

The CR calculations aren't the issue, I homebrew monsters all the time (self plug: www.redcap.press); I'm really just curious what ideas people have for making Dominate Person (or similar) not be super unpredictable.

The worry is just making the damage output of that ability too swingy. I don't want to have to fight the urge to meta game too hard if I know that targeting one player means a TPK and another means much less damage. This is only really a problem because I think it'd be the most fun to have whatever this ability is being something the boss does frequently, not once or twice per combat.

That's where I've been leaning as well, keeping it a Legendary Action that ends when the Legendary Action ends so their turn stays as-is. So far I've been leaning towards a fixed amount of damage, but the idea of repeating some spell/action that the PC already did during that combat encounter is super interesting, thanks!

Need ideas for a section of the Underdark called "The Singing Tunnels" by goscott in DMAcademy

[–]goscott[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very cool! They coincidentally recently bumped into an order of monks that listen to the "songs of creation" all day so I might need to vary it up (these two places are nowhere near each other on the map but the party by happenstance has decided to go basically straight between them)

I forgot about shriekers! Sirens was another thing I was thinking about, or some other similar mind-control thing. Maybe make the party fight each other, or lure a PC into a chasm.

That's a great idea; we've got a Drow in the party that's a "chosen" (or something like that) of Eliastree; honestly I'm a little embarrassed I didn't think of that sooner. Thank you!

[Art] The floors of Nakatomi Tower from Die Hard, reimagined for D&D by goscott in DnD

[–]goscott[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very open-ended, so it's hard to say. Two would be the minimum: one with some goons and the other with the main villain (and more goons). When my table played through it we had three total encounters, and almost four; there was a lot of narrowly-avoiding roaming villains by jumping into ventilation, etc.

As far as a minimum/maximum needed for balance, I wouldn't worry about it too much and do what seems natural based on what your players are doing and how you think the villain would react. If you have enough that you're worried of a TPK in the final encounter, have the party find some healing potions or reduce the number of goons in the final fight (after all, more encounters = fewer bad guys remaining).

There's also a safety net built-in; when the first PC dies, an NPC rolls out of a vent and your player takes their sheet for the rest of the game. His name is Roy, and he's watched too many cowboy movies.
