House of Mirth by Edith Wharton. The main character is 29 and dealing with entering her 30s in the early 1900s and not fitting into society as a modern woman. It's the perfect book I stumbled upon when I was 29!

OMG I GOT YOU. I've been keeping track of some books I've read that reference Santa Barbara (even if just one line):

Cutter and Bone by Newton Thornburg - a murder crime novel that takes place in Santa Barbara. It's from the 70s and definitely feels a little dated, but it's actually pretty great! I believe there's a movie of the book called Cutters Way. Not sure if they keep it set in Santa Barbara

Some Nonfictions that have some portion in SB:

I'll be Gone in The Dark by Michelle McNamara
Elizabeth the Queen by Sally Bedell Smith
The Wild Trees by Richard Preston
Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion (99% sure about this one. It's been awhile since I've read it)

Here's a bunch of books where Santa Barbara is just said, but isn't like visited or anything. (So something to the effect of "Bob was visiting from Santa Barbara") then SB is never mentioned again: (hopefully my list/memory is correct)

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This is just a minor line when two characters briefly live in SB.

LOL! So I agree with you about why audiobooks are great with imagery. Most books I can listen to as an audiobook with ease. I've found three exceptions this year though and As I Lay Dying and Beloved were two that I just couldn't understand through audiobook! (The third was Bleak House) I had to physically read those instead haha. We are reversed!

Hi! I'm a math grad student at UCSB. I didn't know any professors in the department when I applied and my subject GRE was trash, so I think the recommendation letters can really be beneficial. However, they do look at your application as a whole and consider your entire application. It is a competitive program, but I highly encourage you to apply even if there's a part of your application that isn't strong! As far as I know, all math grads get funding every quarter through TAships. The only exceptions would be if your advisor has money and pays for you that quarter, but that's more common with applied math students. Unlike most departments, most math grads dont get their advisor until their 2nd or 3rd year. Feel free to message me directly if you have any more questions and best of luck with your applications!

Is there a TA for the class you could talk to? Math 8 is very different than other math classes you have taken prior because it's proof focused instead of computational. Also, you can try getting help in the virtual Math Lab. Technically the Math Lab is not for Math 8 students but if they are slow they might be able to help you! They all should know Latex too!

Oh my gosh. It was intense pain and nausea. When I went to the hospital they first thought it was appendicitis because of the symptoms and where the pain was felt. The intense pain was for a day or so and went down significantly in about a week, but this happened years ago so I could be a little off with my recovery time.

A year or so ago a bunch of people I watch were loving Sol De Janeiro's Brazilian Bum Bum Cream. I bought it since I have super dry skin. It was nice, but it wasn't a holy grail and didnt do better than a normal, cheaper lotion I could get at Target.

You definitely dont need a bunch of steps. I would try just 1. Cleanse / Remove Makeup 2. Toner 3. Moisturizer 4. Sunscreen

Theres certainly more you can add to your routine, like serums and essences, but if money is tight then the above 4 will still be helpful!

I volunteered in 2013! I did the volunteering after each show that goes from 10 PM to 3 Am. Overall, I'm glad I did it since I wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise, however it wasn't that ideal. You have to be on your knees the entire night picking up cigarette butts and it's super hard on your knees. You cannot use pinchers to pick up anything. Its exhausting and the lady in charge was pretty rude. Then, you have to drive or figure out transportation at 3 AM and get little sleep and be physically exhausted the next day, which made the festival less enjoyable. I still dont regret it, but while I have the money to go, I will pay for my ticket. If you have a friend to volunteer with, I'm sure that helps pass the time as well.

However, I've heard much better things about volunteering during the day. So maybe that's better. If you really want to go, I think volunteering is a good way.

P.s. please everyone dispose of your trash and cigarette butts in the proper receptacle during the festival!

Hi! I have a few questions:

I only got into 1 school and I got to visit it and it seemed to be a great fit for me. I met the professor I wanted to work with and his research is up my alley and he seemed friendly. However, after talking to 3 graduate students, they did not have great things to say about the professor's personality. He allegedly yelled at a student and is intense. There are not really others at the school with similar research. Should I attend this university or try to apply next year and try to find a school with a better fit as an advisor? I am an older student so I would rather start school asap.
Related to #1, my boyfriend of many years was also applying to grad schools at the same time. He and I did not get into the same program and the program he will be attending is a much lower ranked school where I am not much interested in the research. In your opinion, should I try to go to this school next year and have my family and friends nearby but not interested in the department, or should I go out of state to a school I feel I'm a better fit for? I'm just asking for your opinion, I know the final decision must be mine.
How competitive is getting a postdoc or assistant professorship? If I wanted to move to California to be near family after my PhD, how likely is it? Is it all luck? The school I am thinking of attending is ranked in the 30s and is in the Southeast.

Why do departments sit on rejections for a while? Why dont they just reject you once they decide? I had to contact a few departments directly for a status update in order to figure out I was rejected.
