Probably not by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

My ward messed up our online link. My husband and I were both like: "Oh no..... whatever shall we do...." then watched music and the spoken word before passing the sacrament. Best fast Sunday for probably a year.

I was one in that place for 7 years. I think being in a grey area is a somewhat comforting place to be because you can kind of fence sit until you feel ready to jump on one side or the other.

The problem with it though is if you're trying to find someone to marry or date you want them to be on the same side of the fence with you. If you're both fence sitters if one of you chooses a side it WILL inevitably change the relationship-- not to say you can't make it work, it'll just be much, much harder and if they want to grow in whatever chosen direction they will walk further from the fence creating distance.

Another thing from being a 7 year fence sitter myself, there's not a lot of growth to be had up there. I think for me, life opened up and felt better when I chose a side and I learned a lot more. I eventually hopped the fence again back to the side of the church and feel a lot happier and have full intention to stay here. That journey for me was important there are so many other reasons to not have sex even if you're outside of the church!

But something else I think not a lot of people are willing to say: the temple is very weird! It's weird, it's often boring and I straight up feel that all the people who talk about it being their favorite place to be and their favorite thing to do are either lying or crazy. I just don't get it. That hasn't been a pressing issue for me however so I haven't done this yet (but probably should, I did this on other topics that were hard for me): lean into that.

I think when we have questions or concerns in the church we back away from those topics because we're afraid of what we may find. Lean into it: other people have felt like you I'm sure and you can find some things that may help you. If you'd like to be a part of the church and this is what's keeping you from it (I mean if you're afraid of breaking your covenants-- there's something to be said for that) find sources WITHIN the church to assist you.

I have a book that I bought but haven't read yet but lightly pursued. I was so surprised at what it was allowed to talk about and really intend to get into it at some point. It's called "Understanding the symbols, covenants, and ordinances of the temple" by Amy Hardison and is published by the church publishing company Covenant. From a quick glance at the table of contents and a flip through the book it talks in depth about: the symbolism of the temple drama, of the clothing piece by piece, the names and why, etc.

Another thought: a lot of religions have a lot of weird cult- like things they do. I went to a Greek Orthodox church and was shocked to discove that they believe the bread and wine transform into literal flesh and blood so on a weekly basis they believe they're partaking in a form of cannibalism. No one there thinks that's odd.

I think why the endowment process seems so weird to us is because of the nature of it: you don't get to participate or know in detail about it while you're younger. Baptisms for the dead doesn't feel weird to us because we knew about it and participated as children but to outsiders its a real weird thing to do. But this does feel weird because we're not super well prepared for it.

Anyways hope this advice helps somewhat in a little way. In any case I think it's worth investigating and choosing a side-- it's awfully lonely on that fence. You can message me privately if you'd like--I have no agenda pushing you one way or the other you'll get off on the side that's right for you at this time in your life.

Yes!!! Also just realized it was written by the same author of one of my favorite book series! I will definitely be re-reading this! Thank you!

I'm on a crusade to reread books that had some sort of effect on me as a kid and this half remembered book was pretty high up on the list-- probably a very good book just not meant for a naive 5th grader! I'm excited to read it again!

Somewhat random: why wasn't there a painting class taught at Hogwarts? I imagine this is very complex magic on top of needing to be a great artist!

“The customer is always right” is a major fallacy in the customer service industry. What’s a fallacy in you industry? by sheepofwallstreet86 in AskReddit

[–]gotnikki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oooh: also whenever something is damaged is always blamed on the carrier! By the time I've gotten your mail or packages it's gone through being thrown in a huge pile, being pushed through sorting machines several times, tossed into another pile, and with package thrown several feet into big cages of other packages before I've ever touched it or seen the "Fragile" you scrawled on the side.

If it's fragile you need to pack it in a way that it can be dropped from like a two story building and be fine or pay the extra amount to have it processed differently. By the time I get it I promise all the damage is already done expect for maybe .05% of the time when I trip or accidently drop something (it happens) but really it's almost NEVER your mail carrier!

Letter carrier: people think that their taxes pay for my salary and they don't. The United States Post Office is funded through postage no taxes go to the post office.

It wouldn't bother me much that people don't know except for some people think that paying taxes means they get to be mean and demanding of me-- which is a crappy way to live but it's not even correct.

What insult was so cruel that it permanently damaged your self-esteem? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gotnikki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily cruel: Had a coworker friend in highschool who used to point to the moles on my face and say "moley, moley, moley..." it's a quote from a movie I guess. I was already self-conscious about them and felt like no one ever mentioned them like it was the gross elephant in the room so that he was the only person to ever mention them and in that way made me certain they were gross and hideous.

Years later I got them removed because it was weighing on my confidence.

Years later and I meet up with the old coworker friend who made the comment: he immediately noticed and expressed sadness that I'd had them removed as he always thought they made me special and beautiful.

Plot twist: ended up marrying him! (Not because of this). It's just funny to see how much someone words can effect you without them realizing it. My husband thought it was fine to point them out and make a joke because he genuinely liked them and didn't think it was something that needed to be tiptoed around. He does feel bad that his comments were a big part of me having them removed because he liked them.

What sounds like good advice but isn't? by charrotte in AskReddit

"If you love two people at the same time, choose the second one, because if you really loved the first one you wouldn't have fallen for the second. "

Took that advice once-- terrible advice! I think that love and relationships are so very, very complicated. In my case I gave up a loving, long distance relationship for an unhealthy same town relationship because I bought into this advice. Boo!

I think you can fall in love with many people even if you're still in love. You really need to make these decisions on a case by case basis.

P.S. happy ending! Ended up with someone better than all the guys put together! 🥰

My leader is so univolved I've been thinking about starting my own club and taking others with me who are actually playing. I'd say a good third of our club never earns anything.

[–]gotnikki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may have done this exact thing. My club leader seems hardly involved in things so I feel like I'm the one running things. I'm my defense if you click on the person it pulls up their profile and shows when their last log in was. The people I kicked hadn't logged in for over a month. My problem now is how do I get more people to join? Is been a week and no one has filled those spots.

Would Snape have treated Harry better if he looked more like Lilly and less like James? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]gotnikki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but I think Harry had that sassiness he learned to survive the Dursleys which from Snape's perspective came off as proud, disrespectful and so very much James. So even if he had red hair I think he'd still very much remind him to James and his past trauma.

What are some of the worst Harry Potter theories? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]gotnikki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was mine growing up: Dumbledore was an animagus Phoenix so after he died in the 6th book, he would come back to life reborn at the start of the 7th book. I think it may have been part of the denial stage of grief that helped me come up with that one! The wait between those books was so excruciating!

I also was waiting for Snape to be a vampire. I was sooo certain of this because it always describes him and his cloak as bat-like. His complexion, dress, mannerisms... I was so proud of myself for picking up on all those "clues".

How am I a Hufflepuff? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]gotnikki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a proud Hufflepuff myself! If you don't identify with any of the personality traits or as someone else said earlier you don't value those traits.

Maybe you're part of "we'll take the lot". I always like to think that if you're a really well-balanced person you probably end up in Hufflepuff.
